Sunderland vs boro 22 Jan 23

I think they should’ve got more tickets but the amount of boro fans having a pop at Sunderland for it is insane. It obviously will not have been a decision taken by the club.

Out of interest,I'm sure there has always been a rivalry with Boro and Leeds. Is it deemed less than with Sunderland ? Blackpool have their derby with Preston 20 miles away, but the perhaps more dangerous game is Bolton who are 45 mins from the Seaside.

Depends who you talk to. For me Sunderland is a bigger game, but the 'we all hate Leeds scum' chant is sang at every home game. Lad I go to match with would say Leeds. 🤷‍♂️

The rivalry with Leeds was big in the 70s when we were officially North Yorkshire and had Big Jack in charge. Both teams were good as well.

the combined population of those two is around 370,000 people, much the same as Wearside. What we don't have is the huge populations of Gateshead, south Tyneside and county Durham. Even though you will protest good numbers from those area are red and white not black and white.
compared to yours we have a small population to draw from.
Guisbrough,Northallerton,Thirsk,Billingham,thornaby,ingleby barwick and Redcar .
I would say you have a pretty big area for a fan base

No , Boro Leeds was more like the Grant Bovey / Ricky Gervais “ rivalry”
I think it was just they seemed to be in the same league for a bit , and it was the closest game.
They didn’t share our history of 1973 , 1967 Revie Stokoe etc.
they have also tried with Burnley and Derby recently.
What they need is a resurgent Stockton town really, truth be told. I don’t even think Marske are fussed, they hate Guisborough

We all got excited when George Reynolds was taking Darlo to the PL in the 90s 👍

Billingham, Thornaby and Ingleby are part of Stockton Borough area and thus counted in 370k. Redcar and Guisborough modest size but ok. Northallerton and Thirsk, one horse towns with as many Leeds as Boro fans.

Normanby Eston Grangetown South Bank etc ? Add whatever Redcar and Cleveland population is to Middlesbrough and Stockton
Just put half of Marske in though as it’s 50% Safc

This catchment area stuff is all a bit pointless tho?

You support who you support. I would imagine Sunderland have more fans than Middlesbrough.

I always thought it was to do with the perceived size of Middlesbrough as a club to the size of club Sunderland fans see themselves as. A 'derby' with Boro is everything they don't want to be seen as. We are not a Leeds or a Newcastle. Heaven forbid anyone would look on Sunderland as a similar sized club as Boro....

It really isn’t. The majority of us don’t know or interact with any boro supporters. Therefore there isn’t the same bragging rights.

Having worked down in boro and visiting the town regularly I’ve encountered more people claiming to “support” Man U or Liverpool.

As a town Middlesbrough and its people don’t seem to have the same passion for football or their club (generally speaking) I’m sure regular and loyal match goers do, but I’ve rarely encountered many of them.

Could be down the to the people and the town letting it’s football club die and have to reform in what 86?

I genuinely don’t mind seeing boro do well as a northern club and town.

I would have thought a canny bit of County Durham ( Darlington Bishop Newton Ayciffe ect is closer to Boro than Sunderland)
Darlington has a population of about 100000 I believe
Our crowds have remained massive considering the years of dross and unsuccessfulness that has been pointed out by Boro and Mags in this forum
30000 plus averages in Div 3 for 4 years
Over 38 000 in the Championship so far ( 10000 ahead of the next nearest )
Cannot see many teams retaining that level of support after so many years in the wilderness

Billingham has a lot of Sunderland support.

But then parts of Co Durham like Sedgefield, Ferryhill and Bishop have reasonable amounts of support for Boro.

I already have, in the case of Normaby Eston Grangetown and South Bank etc. Boro 145k Normanby etc 30k = 175k Stockton 195k with all the bits quote. Redcar and the East Cleveland bits Loftus etc just shy of 100k but again lots of Leeds fans.

Probably 10+ Sunderland fans to every Boro in those necks of the woods.

I suppose if you don't interact with Boro supporters then you wouldn't have a rivalry. Nor would you know the passion for the club.

Think I’ve met one Boro supporter (season card holder) and he’s a sound lad. Like seeing you lot do well for him.

Like I said, I’m sure (like all football club’s supporters) boro lads and lasses who attend regularly will have a genuine passion.

I’ve just not encountered that many, even in Middlesbrough itself, wish seems awash with plastic Man U of Liverpool (which I usually ask… “what’s wrong with boro?) when telling them I’m Sunlun.

Ok, shocked at that tbf.

In my experience I would say Boro don't draw that many fans from outside of Middlesbrough/Stockton. I think that is reflected in the location of ST holders. A few years ago Gibson mentioned something about it.

I know it gets on my nerves traitors to a man (or woman or other).

You've clearly forgotten about your fans smashing up our toilets when we played you in the fa cup. And some of your lot trying to attack the family stand and ripping out seats at the Riverside earlier this season.

I was there and did not see either of the above!!
I walked through the car park outside the east sand after the game, where all your coaches were parked. Some of your fans threw seats and bottles over the fence.

So, they carried the seats outside of the ground, just to throw them at you??????
Cleveland Police have to try and justify their existence somehow ... they are clueless at everything else partly due to spending too many resources on their Football Intelligence Unit!

Reported,........

Did you use the words Cleveland Police and Intelligence in the same sentence????
