Sunderland vs boro 22 Jan 23

I think Boro fans accept that NUFC v SAFC is the big derby. I imagine though that it’s the constant down playing of their game with you whilst trying to belittle them that both bemuses and amuses them.
It’s undoubtedly a big game, I just don’t get why most want to play it down or deny it.

I have told you why. If Partick fans were swarming around a Celtic board screaming please acknowledge us, some would, some wouldn’t , some would just go Meh.
It is what it is Cyril
People on here would support Boro v Coventry, in fact most would. They would want Boro to beat Alex Neil’s Stoke.

In fact people were backing them when they were playing in the Cup last year ?

You can’t make people hate you if they are ambivalent

You gave your thought , which required a response ? Unless you expect to not consider others thoughts Wev ?

You are welcome to respond. Not sure your point is relevant to mine is all.

The Old Firm and Patrick Thistle comparison is a poor one. For many reasons. The north east dynamic is vastly different.

You’re based in the Teeside area, are games against Boro more meaningful to you, T ??
They’re more meaningful to me than to a lot of our fans but they’re a different thing to a match against your lot.

You're the one harping on about Rangers 🤷‍♂️

oh you want me to respond to this? I mean Newcastle have challenged for league titles and played in the champions League. In the last 70 years Sunderland haven't. Not even close. So quite a bit of difference.

I wouldn’t count one season under Keegan in the early 90’s as exactly dividing the success of the two teams. You say 70 years but Sunderland actually finished 2nd 68 years ago 😉 Oh and the champions league didn’t exist then fyi.

Just like a lot of Boro fans would have supported Sunderland against Derby last year.

I haven't at any point tried to claim that Boro fans are angels. You said that Boro fans had gathered outside the away end to goad Sunderland fans. I'm not sure whether that's true or whether it was a case of Boro fans were walking through the car park and both sets of supporters were goading eachother, but there were plenty on both sides acting like tools.

I know for certain that at least one seat was thrown as it happened near to where I was stood. Can't remember whether there were more but one being ripped out is bad enough. And yeah it definitely happened but if you choose to believe it didn't that's fine, I won't lose any sleep over it.
That's because it never happened. You've had a mare tonight Stevie boy.

That’s fair dos, just it appears that people are always trying to out do each other in who can claim to not be bothered about Boro the most.
The areas of Peterlee, Easington etc who are as close to Boro as they are Sunderland will definitely live side by side with Boro fans so maybe it’s more relevant in the mix areas.
What a load of shite. I don't know of any Boro fans in Easington, maybe half a dozen in Peterlee.
More placca mags than owt else.

Ha. Come on, you know what I mean. Newcastle have overall been much more successful in the past 70 years. Challenging around the top of the premier league under Keegan and Robson and probably going to this season. You can't argue that.

Oh I think it is very relevant. And the comparison is a good one, in fact a great one.
You can have Sheffield Wed/Sheffield Utd with say Rotherham if you like ( lost their league cup final though).

Either way, point stands.

I think the burning question is what do you want ?
Do you want to be despised , hated , every mention of your town met with vitriol ?
3 points ? You get them regular
Tell me what you want from us Wev ?

It's A derby just not THE derby, I want to beat them a little more than say Hull or Huddersfield but ultimately it's just another game

I don't get that worry or butterflies that we get in the lead up to the mags games, yes it would be nice to beat them but it's nice to win any game
100 per cent this -the Mags games and all the victories in a row give you a lift for months .
Win this it’s 3 points and move on.
I know more safc fans from Teeside than Boro ones so it’s no where near The Derby-win it’s 3 points and is forgotten by next game .
Win v the Mags and bragging rights for a long long time-and not forgotten .
This game is possibly more important if we are both still doing ok
Top two look set so it’s battling for play off places in probability
TM said he’s at the biggest club in the Championship-however a big fan base means nothing really -we do now have a team of young hungry players who in their first season back in this league can hopefully give Boro a good game .

I know they haven't been the greatest of travellers to our place since the 70's and also the reasons why but under 2K seems very harsh. Should have given them 3K and they could respond in kind the next time we visit them.

Maybe I misunderstand? Unless you mean Rotherham are Sunderland? given out of those 3 clubs Rotherham have spent the most seasons in the third tier of english football? Sheff Wed did win a league cup in recent history so maybe you mean they are boro? You could maybe include Huddersfield as Sunderland given they won some trophies in the early 1900s too? I half joke - but stop being ridiculous you are better than that.

The dynamic in the north east is of Newcastle who are the biggest in the region by some margin - everyone outside Sunderland would accept that. Then of Sunderland and Middlesbrough whose aim is to try and establish themselves in the top tier for an amount of time and maybe have a run in a cup. That isn't a recent thing either.

I want nothing me mate. Just some banter with smog suited mackems singing we hate boro ;) or did I imagine that?

They do have decent away support now
I would give them more but it’s probs Police advice

Oh you didn’t understand Wev 😉

You will get your rivalry off me , seeing as I am down here and start off the Loch Ness Drogba chants in Rosey Ogradys every Friday.
I will be driving throughout Teesside after the match honking my horn to the tune of Cant Help falling in Love , should the unthinkable happen and we win.
With my sunderland flag flying outside the Mermaid ( Sunderland pub by the way )
But sadly , the rest , barring Hank , are really not that fussed.

You knew that though

Haha fair.

Being a pessimist I can't help thinking - by the law of averages - that you will beat us very soon.

Out of interest,I'm sure there has always been a rivalry with Boro and Leeds. Is it deemed less than with Sunderland ? Blackpool have their derby with Preston 20 miles away, but the perhaps more dangerous game is Bolton who are 45 mins from the Seaside.
