Maybe it had something to do with your fans gathering outside of the away end to goad the SAFC fans?
Also how can seats be thrown when you claim the trouble was outside of the ground? You’ve tied yourself in a knot here.

I was walking through the car park and a load of your lot and ours were right up against the fence goading each other, and I could hear the chant "town full of paedos" (classy stuff).

I noticed some on both sides were punching and kicking the fence and some tried to climb over it, although it was all a bit embarrassing, as they clearly weren't going to be able to actually get at one another.

Bottles and coins were thrown by both sides and I honestly remember somebody on your side threw a seat over the fence. God knows how they managed to get it out of the stadium but it definitely happened.

Every Boro/Sunderland game I've attended down the years has always felt different to your average league game.

I don't know when it became a 'thing' to try and play the fixture down but it's a shame really. As a football fan, you surely should embrace the idea of having rivalries and games which have added spice.

Was always the same when we played Newcastle and Leeds. Didn't feel quite as intense as games vs Sunderland but still always a cracking atmosphere. Give me that any day of the week over playing the likes of Reading and Luton.

I imagine the ‘thing to play it down’ started around the time of social media and Internet forums.
I always enjoyed Boro games as a NUFC fan.
The league cup game at Ayrsome under Keegan where won 2-0 and the New Year’s Day game we lost when Wilkinson scored stand out.

When comparing stadium capacities Sunderland got around double the tickets at The Riverside to what Boro are getting at The SOL.

If Sunderland got the equivalent percentage of tickets at The Riverside as Boro are getting at the SOL you would have had around 1,300 ... you were given 2,575.

Also Sunderland were given 4,500 for the FA Cup match at The Riverside in 2018.

Seems wrong that SAFC would minimise the Boro allocation to what they have, especially given that it is "just another game".

We also minimised the Coventry allocation after they didn’t behave too.

A 'derby' with Boro is everything they don't want to be seen as. We are not a Leeds or a Newcastle. Heaven forbid anyone would look on Sunderland as a similar sized club as Boro....

For many outside of the region, from the outside looking in, they wont see a big difference in the 2 clubs.
Of course the Robson, Southgate, Ravanelli, Juninho, Europe, league cup etc brought you more inline with, if not certainly more prominence than Sunderland in the eyes of the neutral.

Last time your lot were at the SOL there were problems with stuff being thrown from the top tier. It's a direct result of that.

From the neutrals point of view ( of which I am here ) a lot will see what Boro have done recently as superior to what Sunderland have done.
Somebody say down in Bristol or wherever with no regional bias will just look at the likes of this will he not ?

I’m always quite surprised how much of an effort is made to play down the Boro game on here.
Short drive up the A19 with a lot of Sunderland supported areas as close to Boro as they are the SOL.
Places like Peterlee etc are on the doorstep of Boro so whilst it’ll never be SAFC’s biggest game, it’s still a big game.

We could lose vs Boro and it would register on the disappointment scale the same as a defeat to someone like Millwall as an example. It's possibly a game with more hype but it will never come close to a game vs the mags.

Anyone outside the North East is unlikely to care about Newcastle, Sunderland or Middlesbrough full stop.

Same as people up here don't care about the Steel City derby, for example.

Are they ? Every time I drive past the likes of Peterlee or a Wheatley Hill I’m only 10 minutes off passing through the Boro.
I’d be amazed if there wasn’t a decent proportion of Boro fans in these parts.

There's been a few ocassions when you haven't sold out your allocation at the SOL, but last time there were problems with missiles being thrown from the top tier.

I would ask Sunderland fans to refrain from reading or responding to this post…..The Boro fans ( they have Boro Ultra sweatshirts!) are incapable of understanding or accepting our indifference to them. Attention is the oxygen they crave ( there is a joke in there for some of you) that they can’t get anywhere else.

Not sure where you are going with this? Are you trying to points score or something? Yes the company that owned the club went bust and Gibson saved us. We then over the next 40 years played became an established PL club, won a cup and reached the UEFA cup final. Was great thanks.
