The old county boundaries broadly followed the River Tees, but there were twists which meant a small section of land that was North of the river was part of Yorkshire and a small part of the land South of the river was part of County Durham.

The small part of land North of the river that was part of Yorkshire was largely Portrack Marsh.

Yes near where Asda is now.
That area was classed as Yorkshire, but became County Durham when they redirected the Tees .
Before then it was south of the river

Agree. The coverage both SAFC and Boro get in the NE media is pretty poor to what the murders and terrorists get.

I was brought up half way between Sunderland and Middlesbrough, and I didn't know one lad who followed Middlesbrough. Mind you, I can count on one hand lads I knew who followed Newcastle.

What about your ignorance. Hartlepool hospital was a hovel that needed knocking down. I worked there for years and it just didn't have the services local people needed. J C H did so that's where you go. Same as we have to go to Newcastle for certain treatments. You are letting decisions made by crappy politicians drive you mad.
Oh and the hospital at Acklam is a private one built with private funding.

They definitely do seem to attach more meaning to this game than we do, but while we have a derby which obviously means so much more to us, I've always called the Boro game a derby too.

One thing I would say is, that when growing up, I always thought their fans were not as fanatical as SAFC or NUFC, not only numbers (obviously) but also in terms of atmosphere created/passion etc. But, to be fair - Boro seem to have got their act together on that front and they travel really well away from home these days, and they're capable of making a right racket at their ground too.

Should be a good game, both sides are flying. We owe them one like.

I worked in Middlesbrough for 7 years, a while back and it's a North East Derby when we play each other, although lacking the intensity of the occasions when we play the delusional tea towel wearers... The Boro lot are generally similar to us, support their club, but are realistic and pragmatic about their place in the football world.... The lack of real success (1 Cup win each since 1973) tells its own sombre story and nationwide we are viewed in a similar light by other football fans... We owe them one at the SOL, mind as our record, especially in league terms on Teesside has been poor...

To be honest with you, I never had a dislike for Geordies and Newcastle. Used to loved the derby matches but never really disliked them and nobody I knew did either. When I was growing up you just assumed everyone in County Durham followed Sunderland, but when you got older and started playing in pool leagues and the like you realised that wasn't the case. I remember playing in the pool league at places like Langley Park and it was wick with them. A big surprise to us.
