Maguire will be playing this as a kick up the arse imo. Power isn't a guaranteed starter now in my eyes. But again, I agree I'd rather be seeing Neil and Embleton playing.

It just was never going to happen.
Because of the manager, the choices he’s made in shaping his bloated squad and his clear preference for experience over raw talent. It’s a choice that Parkinson has made. It isn’t an inevitability.

I've already said I agree. But the Fringe players will always be ahead of the under 23s.
The point is that Diamond was MOTM last time out but then never had another sniff. Youngsters could be MOTM and score a hattrick in the nonsense cup and they still won't be given a chance in the league. Parkinson promised a pathway for youngsters but Im afraid he was lying. There is a reason why Checkatrade matches arent counted as real appearances. The reason why people are annoyed is we've lost a boatload of talent and the club has said one plan to avoid this in the future is to offer a 'pathway to the first team'. The fact that PP has no intention of following through on this will mean more talent leaving.

So other than the usual, plodding along, aging first team squad nackers that we all know all can grind us to 6th before depreciating in ability and value, we have Diamond in the first team (great) and Neil and embleton on the bench, and that's it. mcfadzean and Sanderson may be useful but we are solid enough at the back with Willis, Wright, flannagan, onien etc... So what exactly is the point in having O'Brien on the bench instead of hawkes? Why not start embleton instead of the tired old pairing of Dobson and power? Why not give a few others of u23s a day out with the first team and a few debuts instead of having leadbitter, wyke and McLaughlin in there.

I don't hate any sunderland player, as shite as they are. But I f***ing despise Phil Parkinson.

We may win today, and then he'll probably play his favourites in the next round, and likewise with the checkatrade, so today and Tuesday probably the last chance for some younguns to get in for the rest of the season

Fuck.right.off

Well he did have a sniff at Charlton and looked a bit meh tbf. There seems to be this assumption that these players deserve to be in ahead of players that have got 47 points from their last 24 games? Are they showing they deserve to be in Monday - Friday? Are they team doing so terribly that we should take the risk of playing players just because they are young?

Maguire should be out of the team and Parkinson should have him running. That would be a kick up the arse. Being selected isnt

I honestly don't get it at all. Happy to throw McFadzean straight in because he's not a kid but Neil, Diamond and Embleton have to do what?

Just doesn't make any sense.
Criminal, really. The McFadzean one is mental.

That the usual subs from the first team squad were always going to play?

How can they not like? Fringe players get game time in Cup competition... Shocker!

Aye but it’s shite

What’s the point of playing George Dobson

He’s not remotely good enough to be at Sunderland

Fair point - however, Power, Dobson and Maguire have shown enough recently to show that they definitely dont deserve to be in the team. The point is that he views older players differently regardless of form.
