This. Power, Dobson, Wyke, Flanagan, McLaughlin and O'Brien will figure more often than not

And that is the problem

Gofds honest truth, I couldnt give a fuck about promotion this season, if IF, we insisted on playing younger, more progressive and attacking, modern, attacking players and tactics... We've been here 3 years, what does it matter it it's 4.. I'd have wyke, McLaughlin, power, Dobson, grigg, Graham, O'Brien and a couple of others swifty moved out of first team duties and moved on, and concentrate on paying our own younger players and signing younger players from wherever, premier League cast offs or non-league, whatever... Give up on promotion this season and it would be better for our longer term chances of success..

Just keep trying, keep churning out teams of young mobile and positive players till it clicks, then run with it. Scraping up with O'Brien and power and that is counter productive, as we'll be back in L1 2 years later and back to square one

You get what you deserve in games. It's amazing how many times people like you are saying we "clung on to......undeserved victories" and give no credit to the team or the manager, yet when we lose (only twice this season) it's ALL the manager's fault. You don't know that we will "start to lose games" because these performances have given us more wins than defeats.

It's not great to watch and their are definite concerns (lack of goals, lack of decent cover for wide players, lack of creativity in midfield) but we are winning far more games than we are losing. Every defeat gets put under the microscope, ever win simply brushed aside as "lucky" or "undeserved".

I prefer to see the wider context - a team that is winning and is averaging more than 2 points per game. Ultimately, at this stage of the season, that is all that matters........
I see troubling signs similar to the collapse near the end of the Ross tenure. Performances were as bad as this then too, and the defeats eventually began to rack up despite the apparent confidence of certain posters that we'd be fine. As Sunderland fans we should be savvy to potential trouble, and all my alarm bells are ringing. I'm not the only one either. Time will tell, I suppose.

Very simply, we should be trying to improve at all times.

To point out today, or last week, or the week before, that there is massive room for improvement, is met with shouts from people who I think are clueless football wise of 'stop twisting we are winning!"

It doesn't help

Well played Mansfield. Shame in a way for Mansfield fans not being there to enjoy their moment. Well done Nigel. Taught us a lesson today, a lesson we seem to have been given far too often by too many. It’s sickening to see what this club has become

Clou ghy seems to have us sussed.....he has a good record of results at the SOL
I thought Grigg put himself about a bit today. He was pretty garbage but it’s hardly a surprise. This desire to refuse any chance of playing through the middle in order to attack via the wings is the exact opposite of the game he needs in order to be effective.

Yes...i thought he and Power were supposed to have a decent understanding of each others play when at Wigan......did Power even try to pass it to Grigg today ?
All the midfield are awful, and Dr Frankenstein couldn't cobble together one decent striker from bits of Grigg, Graham and O'Brien.

The two wide lads did well, and Embleton looked lively.

Parky has to forget the 'experienced' ne'er-do-wells and play more young 'uns.

I think the u23s would have made more of a game of it today than our chosen 11
Today hasn't altered anything, 8 changes and missing all of our key players. It's almost as if he deliberately picked that team because he wanted out of the cup ASAP

The wider context of our performances this season is still a worry, but whilst we are winning and in the mix for automatic promotion there is no way the club will sack Parkinson

Frankly, the bed wetting and whinging over a single defeat is mag-esque levels of embarrassing

Of course he wanted to win....otherwise he wouldnt have played his captain , last seasons first choice midfield pairing and all of his recent signings . Had he wanted t o get knocked out he woukd have played all the u23s ....then had a perfect excuse

In the post match interview Parkinson mentioned "the number of times that we crossed the ball into the box was enough to win the game" three times in the first minute.

He even said he'd "reviewed video of the crosses straight after the match". He blamed not winning on not showing enough desire in the box.

He's an absolute one dimensional dinosaur of a manager.

if thats true then he should not be picking Gr igg or Graham again

Aye, heard his interview earlier. Seems to think if you have a lot of crosses into the box that automatically means you'll score goals. Far too simplistic and limited approach to setting teams up to attack.
Well we have won more than just about everyone else over the last 25 games so it can’t be that ridiculous.

As you'd expect given the extra resources that we have over every other team in the league we play in. We're also generally very strong defensively (outside of teams getting at us with pace) for the most part so that is why we scrape wins. Doesn't mean we're not massively limiting ourselves going forward though does it?

Our performances are getting worse? Pleased the young lads and Macca (LW) got a game. Usual suspects didn't bother turning up...Time to drop Maguire.

If it limits us gong forward and we are still getting points over 25 games thta gets you automatic promotion easily then is it really that bu=ig an issue? Also what extra resources do we have over Hull, Charlton, Ipswich etc? How much have we spent on players in the last year compared to Charlton, Peterborough, Blackpool etc? We might have a larger wage bill due in part to paying players that are no longer here and we are even unable to choose from our entire playing staff just to stay within the wage cap. Teams are able to spend more than us and have greater flexibility in the transfer market.

No, we just moan about Dobson as he has had numerous chances and done nothing of note yet.
People moan about Dobson but Power was worse yesterday.
At least Dobson has youth on his side which Power doesn't.
The criticism for me isn't that Dobson is getting chances, it's that Neil, Embleton & Diamond aren't getting enough.
They all need more game-time in addition to Dobson, not instead of him.

What were you watching yesterday?
The problem isn't that dobson needs more game time: it is that he is getting game time in the first place and moreover, that he and Power lasted the full 90 minutes.
I hope neither of them ever play again.

I would be happy with that.

You are wrong. I think everyone would accept there's room for improvement but that shoudn't lead to huge criticism of the manager, in fact belittling and abuse of a manager that has been getting really good league results for the whole calendar year.
