Sunderland railway station.

The money would be better spent on extending the metro to the coalfields and Washington imo.

Close the station and put a walking escalator from park lane to the train platform. It’s rediculous the train station and bus interchange are so far apart

Not really sure a facelift for the station is the most pressing concern. It's really about the services.

Surely Sunderland deserves both ? No good having decent services if they are not going to be used. No decent short or long stay parking, toilets, waiting rooms etc people will continue to jump in their cars / taxis and go through to Durham or Newcastle and pick trains up there. Also, even with the best services in the country, anybody arriving at Sunderland station probably takes one look at "Burger Kings Basement" and will jump straight back on the train.

there’s no point have a train station half a mile from connecting services when there’s a station half a mile away with connecting services

No the metro should be reduced not made bigger. It only drained footfall from Sunderland north. In my opinion we should bin off the metro all together and increase links south, especially to Durham and the East Coash Mainline.

Unfortunately there is a wider population in Sunderland other than north of the river which would see an improvement in transport links and access to the rest of the city

True and with a train line we can do it, without being a direct link to Tyneside and cutting our own throats in the process.

I understand the sentiment however if people have to drive into Sunderland then they also have the choice of whether to drive anywhere metro, Newcastle, Durham. If there was a more comprehensive metro service which created a loop south of Sunderland linking Durham etc then you’d have to go through Sunderland to get to Newcastle for argument sake.

if the council, the region and the country are serious about sustainability then a more comprehensive light rail system is paramount. Hopefully there is a way to enjoy both. I think this would also be a big sell to business to relocate to Sunderland. Also there needs to be an understanding of what justification there is to put more national services through Sunderland as effectively Sunderland would be a terminus.

Absolutely, hence me deeming it not the most pressing concern.

The whole city could do with investment if it's anything like I saw it last (albeit 15-16 month ago). I'd love a full overhaul but yeah not sure that'll come.

Not if there was a link to the ECML at Durham from Sunderland, like there used to be.

ok but what’s the rationale to come to Sunderland via Durham? Why would the operator not continue to run additional services to Edinburgh? Surely that would be more profitable than to run the service to Sunderland?

im not sure if cross country services would require access to east coast mainline via Durham.

the current route to Sunderland at least picks up some outlying stations wonder if there is the possibility to connect to Middlesbrough?
