Clydebank took a battering.

I'd class that as Greater Glasgow

:-)

Was used as a naval base in WW1, so probably one of the reasons why it was bombed in WW2

slightly ignore me, not sure about its status in WW1, but was used as a training base for ASW crews in WW2

(stupid me had got it mixed up with Rosyth)

:-(

I'm not surprised at that!

It's a shame that we don't know more about all of this, we do have some photos of an air rifle shooting club that my grandad helped to run, he'd have been a good sniper if the Jerries/Houghton had invaded.
The Echo did a thing a few years ago think it was called something living hitory? I know both Mam and Dad told some stories about the war.

I think Coventry will be in there somewhere

aye, i mentioned them again a few posts later IRO the Alvis factory

but its the sort of thing that unless you start to dig deep you'll not know how many times they had german visitations - i mean the famous Coventry raid stands out but there was plenty more targets in that general are that i can think of just off the top of my head

Castle Bromwich for the spitfire shadow factory, Derby for the Rolls Royce factory that was there, etc

Monkwearmouth station ( next to St. Peter's ) was bombed by a Zeppelin in ww1

Dresden was flattened in retaliation for Coventry, I was there last year ago and all the buildings have been re-built since the German unification to look as they did pre-war. Beautiful city, much better that the concrete shite we build.

I seem to remember that in the 1980s a game at Hartlepool Utd got postponed cos one of the stands was damaged in an overnight storm. It had to be pulled down & turned out it had originally only been built as a temporary structure after the original one got hit by a bomb from a Zeppelin in WW1. I seem to remember the German navy shelled Scarborough in WW1 too.

I'm not going to get into a Dresden debate but no it was'nt a Coventry retaliation. Think about it, the first 1000 bomber raid by us was in 1942 so we had plenty of practice in getting revenge for Coventry

I was talking to an old fella in Canada a few years ago who said he was evacuated to his aunties from London as a young child during the war. Her house in Toward Rd was bombed at the same time as the winter gardens.

It was bombed to fuck. Hence a shitload of post ww2 buildings around.
Too many for individual posts.
This, heavily bombed because of the shipbuilding -me dar was bombed out the East end.

I understand that Sunderland was bombed far more heavily than Newcastle because the Germans felt they would only really need one relatively undamaged sea port in the north east post-invasion, and that was to be Newcastle. Sunderland was also the bigger producer of ships so it would make sense to disrupt that as well.

And we had the better football team which could've been a threat to Bayern Munich...........

My Nana's piano suffered bomb damage when the house windows were blown in - the end was all scratched with glass and the very last white key never worked again - Hitler has a lot to answer for.....
Eeee, look at me, my ganny had a piano...pathetic!

Dad told me a story that one of the German bombs had exposed one of the mass burial graves from the cholera outbreak in the 19th century -him and his mate went in and were booting skulls around -as you do -they were only 5-6 year old.
