Sunderland Empire

My Mrs went on Friday night and they had to pause the show because of women actually fighting 😄

Along with drunk women getting kicked out for heckling, madness!
Aye a friend went near the start of the run and they had to stop show a couple of times for same reason - it got a bit heated at the interval like before they departed.

We love the theatre, cinema, restaurants and bars. Tickets all booked for Mary Poppins and if we can shuffle things about we might get to An Inspector Calls; we’ve seen the Stephen Daltry production a couple of times and it’s spot on.

The house is an ingenious piece of theatre.

Sadly over the past couple of years there has been an increase in the numbers of people who can’t sit still, talk thru everything or shout at each other, can’t handle their drink and generally just spoil it for everyone else. Given the price of theatre tickets these days that makes us more choosy as to what we go see and where we dine.

Sambuca complaining on fb about horrible customers who steal, can’t say please or thank you, sit on phones on full volume, feet on seats and tables etc

There’s a basic lack of manners these days and it appears that thickies don’t mind you knowing they’re thick; years ago if you were an idiot you at least had the decency to not brag about it

Strange world we live in

Anyway…..the thread; Empire Theatre is spot on and the seats are more comfortable than the one up the road 😎

I am not excusing people's bad behaviour but don't forget that before we start saying "people these days..." that the Empire Theatre began it's life a people's Music Hall.

Back in those days audiences at the Empires could be a bit of a challenge for performers. Although it did not have quite the reputation of the infamous Glasgow Empire it is said that in the early 1950's the main dressing room of the London's Palladium had the warning "Don't play Sunderland Empire!" graffitied on to its wall.

My old dad loved the Empire. As a kid in the 1930's he lived in the town centre and he used to hang round the stage door and run errands for the acts and get in to see the shows for free. He did tell me that the audience could get quite vocal if an act didn't measure up to their standards and that drunken disagreements over the quality of performers could break out .

The act that dad always recalled as getting the worst reception he ever seen was the comedian Ted Ray in the late 1940's . Poor old Ted was "given the bird" during the middle of his act i.e. hissed off stage by the entire audience . Apparently until the day he died in 1977 Ted didn't have much affection for the people of Sunderland and would regularly have a dig at the town when an opportunity presented itself when he was on radio or TV.

I was in Aperitif last night, there was one other bloke in. The rest intimidating groups of rapid women knocking cocktails back like they were free

It seems among some to be acceptable to just fo whatever they want

The price of tickets just doesn’t seem to have any bearing
The fleetwood Mac tickets weren’t cheap according to my wife yet people were treating it as though the tickets were a £1 each
I’ve been to fire station where a family have left after 30 minutes and not come back for second half

Love the empire I go a lot. This year so far seen Joseph, calamity Jane and Tina. Tina was absolutely amazing. Got tickets for Sunderland Story and Matilda.
Yeah love to Empire . We saw Calamity Jane, which was canny.Got Chitty and The Prat Pack to look forward too.

We were there lastnight , great show but ruined by mortal women talking ‘singing’ and shrieking all the way through - thankfully the worst of them was turfed at half time. Don’t think I’ll be back for a Saturday evening performance again
4 years at least since I was in ,it was like a night club . Serving drinks throughout so people up and down and talking non stop
Left early saying something to stewards

I think there's certain groups who see something and make it an occasion with mates they haven't seen for a while so it doesn't really work because they just want to drink and chat .
Even blokes at quieter acoustic type gigs
Bla bla bla bla . Stfu man .

Spot on - people just seem to think they can do what they want and screw everyone else

Some musicals are terrible for it. I get you want to sing along but I haven't paid a small fortune to listen to your out of tune singing

Add to what you have said, people who think a theatre trip is the appropriate place for a feast

Similar thing happened when I went to see the new Purple Celebration at the Fire Statin last month groups of woman chatting during the gig feckin ridiculous

I now avoid the empire
Sorry but it’s been brought on by the clientele they now attract
Prefer smaller shows and places

I was at that 40th Anniversary concert, or one of them anyway. Shane MacGowan was supposed to be the guest but don't think he turned up, or turned up very late, can't remember now. Still got the programme somewhere.

Actually, think it wasn't the 40th Anniversary gig, it was to remember Luke Kelly's death and was either 20th or 21st Anniversary of that so would be 2004 or 2005.
