Sunderland Empire

Three of my favourite gigs there very contrasting the Dubliners the Boomtown Rats and Morrissey all quality.

Also saw Niall Quinn's doctorate speech there very moving and eloquent.
I was at Morrissey there. Class night. We were right up in the gods as they say. Seemed like we were looking over the top of the band. Saw Elvis Costello there also.

Born and Bred in Sunderland and only ever been in the Empire once.... and that was for me Graduation...so free ticket!!!!

Only ever been in St Peters once an all....

I must get out more .... Lol

Been a few times in the past couple of years. The Lion King and Aladdin were excellent, as were Six and Wicked.

That Peaky Blinders one last week wasn’t my cup of tea (contemporary dance) but the Mrs loved it. Felt sorry for the performers though as a decent chunk of the audience didn’t come back after the interval, mainly middle aged blokes in waistcoats and flat caps who must have been expecting something else.

Going to Dear Evan Hansen in a few weeks too.

Always a good afternoon/evening out. As has been said before, the calibre of shows they get is fantastic.

I'm surprised others haven't just built a huge metal box thing
It is not just a case of plonking a huge metal box (Fly Tower) on top of the stage area, to give you an idea the Empire Back Stage area is 42ft deep by 72ft wide, Theatre Royal in Newcastle is 19ft deep by 56ft wide, even the stage at the Empire is a lot bigger then Newcastle.

You couldnt even extend the Theatre Royal to be comprable to the Empire as it is Grade 1 listed, and only has a capacity of 1,249, where as the Empire has a capacity of 2,200

Something I would love to see Sunderland Council as owners of the Empire do is have some kind of wrap or art work around the fly tower so that it doesnt look like a can of corned beef.

There was talk of an architectural competition around 2010, there was a London based architect from Sunderland (not the obvious one, but also very successful) who was really keen to do something, but it never happened.

It would be good if they made a feature out of it.

Wasn't sure what to expect of Six but thought it was really good

Having read the book for Dear Evan Hansen not sure what to expect of a musical but going with an open mind and the tickets were cheap enough

Absolutely loved Six, only downside was how short it was but that’s a minor quibble as their stories had been told.

I first heard about DEH when the film came out and been itching to see the show since, really looking forward to it. Theres some really good songs.

We're a chalk and cheese city
Love to see the mega queues for the matinées on Saturday for " theatre"
The arse scratchers will say ,nice if you can afford etc .
That goes for everything though. The Fire Station is a great venue if you can afford to attend. The area around there has been upgraded and I thoroughly enjoyed my day there recently. A great addition…… for those who can afford it.
Can’t please everyone.

Never knew the TR was that much smaller, if I’d guessed I’d have thought they were similar.

It’s amazing what people can afford especially the “if you can afford it” squad.
They never seem to be short when they need it or want something
I recognised this at a very early age
Eeeh we couldn’t afford that
Do you want to see our cruise photos
We were in London last week

It's the price of a family take away or footy match to see a gig at the FS
The " too expensive " people will buy a slab of lager and a packet of fans no bother. Clearly genuine skint people won't do much culturally but that doesn't mean the stuff shouldn't be available and done

Totally agree. It is a shame that some can’t do something. Most can’t do everything. Neither are a reason not to make it available though.
The Fire Station and the improvements to the area, resulted in 4 of us coming to Sunderland. Spending our money in the bars. Eating there and enjoying a concert. We didn’t spend thousands but it is about baby steps. We enjoyed the day and will come back. Steady change usually works.

I think that is because of how the two building have been designed, the theatre royal has a entrance which spans the full width of the building and I dare say it looks a lot grander, where as the empire theatres entrance is just a small corner of the building.

I suppose the gradient of the site forced this type of design

Attracts people from a huge catchment area
Carlisle sw Scotland and down to hull and Doncaster
Remember the time Micky Rooney was in panto.

My neighbours (Glasgow) travelled down to see him especially and the panto.

I think he must have attracted a few from far and wide. Hollywood legend.
