Sunderland Empire

Attracts people from a huge catchment area
Carlisle sw Scotland and down to hull and Doncaster
We were at Chelsea flower show a couple of years 😎😎
and sitting at a table have a drink two couples clocked out accents
They were from Doncaster
They said they loved regularly travelling to Sunderland for the theatre and also came every year in the caravan with grandkids as seaburn was their favourite beach
They loved it and one of the blokes started reminiscing about the 1973 cup final and how was his favourite final

I suppose the gradient of the site forced this type of design
Personally I think it has a lot to do with the time periods and the target audiance at the time, the Theatre Royal was opened in 1837 for the middle and upper classes, where as the empire was built in 1907 and was primaraly used for variety and vaudeville which was more for the working classes at the time

I'm an exile and have only been to the Empire once, 55 years ago! Saw Count Basie and his band (including Cleanhead Vinson) and I was sitting behind my trumpet-playing Geography teacher from Houghton Grammar, Cliff Elliot.
Memories eh?

Absolutely loved Six, only downside was how short it was but that’s a minor quibble as their stories had been told.

I first heard about DEH when the film came out and been itching to see the show since, really looking forward to it. Theres some really good songs.
Never managed to catch Six on tour - but I've seen the West End version, and got it booked again next year to take the kids to. I think it gets a hard time sometimes because it's put in the "musical" box and it really doesn't fit right in there - but we all came out with a big grin on our faces and enjoyed it.

Got Hamilton booked for the Empire next year as well - bairns want to see it and rather than taking them down to London (I've seen it in the West End three times), we're combining it with seeing their grandparents, me fixing all the TV channel apps my mum's managed to log herself out of and we're all going. Friend's seen the London and Tour versions and said the Tour one was really really good.

In terms of access to big shows - the Empire gets much more than we do in the bloody centre of England here!

Totally agree. It is a shame that some can’t do something. Most can’t do everything. Neither are a reason not to make it available though.
The Fire Station and the improvements to the area, resulted in 4 of us coming to Sunderland. Spending our money in the bars. Eating there and enjoying a concert. We didn’t spend thousands but it is about baby steps. We enjoyed the day and will come back. Steady change usually works.
Good to see a mag coming to the city for a night out.

Far too many of your fans will only come for football.

Aside from the football or the theatre it’s the first time we have had a night out in Sunderland. The missus been going to Sunderland Empire as long as I can remember. She seen about every musical theatre show they have had on in last 15-20 years, but not for a drink, food etc. Will certainly do it again. Was a nice day. Bars were not mental busy and the atmosphere around the place was good.
Want to have a look at Sheepfolds as well.

It's probably only recently that it's been worthwhile for most people travelling in. They've done a great job creating an area like that around the empire.

I think once the bridge opens up the Sheepfolds area up it'll be even better.
