Sunday is our biggest game for decades

Brighton will get more than a draw imo. They can still get Champions League if results go their way. United are the most on the beach team in the league this weekend.

I expect Liverpool to get it done v Brentford. And I expect us to win. That would give us conference league, being upgraded to Europa if Villa win the Europa, Liverpool win and lose to Man City. Three results that tbh, are all favoured outcomes...
No it won't. For the millionth time. 8th will be Conference, 7th will be Europa. The only thing that might change as a result of Villa winning is whether 6th is Europa or Champions League.

Incredibly hard to define what exactly is or has been our biggest game for a decade as it comes down to personal feelings. For me the league one game was big from the sense of sheer relief of finally getting out of that bloody hell hole of a league and last year was bigger as it announced we were once again back relevant and competing again but I've never seen us compete to this standard in my lifetime before its completely unchartered territory and therefore I'd say this is the biggest from a selfish point of view.

I know we had the Reid seasons but the premier league is a totally different beast now with so much quality from top to bottom and I have had to sit and watch Millwall, Middlesbrough, Wigan, Birmingham, Stoke and Burnley all enjoy European nights, so to have a real live chance of achieving that is huge, maybe a little selfish but I'd personally class it as the biggest game in the last decade for that reason alone.

It's just nice to not have any real pressure on it, it's a bit like Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. We've got onto the show, won fastest finger first and are now guaranteed the 32k safety net just on a free role. Cannot wait for Sunday

That is a spot on analogy, mind.

I don’t think it’s as big as the playoff final, but it’s only a midge’s dick behind. Not qualifying for Europe won’t define our season, whereas the playoff final did.

I’m excited for the summer transfer window anyway, but it’ll be special if we can attract slightly better players due to Europe.

Thanks for clarifying - havent read the whole thread so looking at the table had me confused (not hard mind) with Europe talk

so then what , 7th and 8th both get europa league ?
Nah 7th is locked in for Europa and 8th is locked in for Conference. The only position that could change is 6th.

Great analogy. I was gonna say this is big because of the potential prize, there is no real downside to a loss like there is in a playoff final.

I agree with what was said on the first page about the cost of failure.

If we don't win, we shrug and say it is a shame but has been one hell of a season far exceeded expectations. We will not be looking back on this for what might have been in years to come. Some of us still remember that '92 cup run and what might have happened if John Byrne had managed to take that chance.

If we do win, it is not even in our hands, so again we shrug feeling a little disappointed.

If we win and results go our way, we would be over the moon achieving something we never expected at this stage of our rebuilding of the club since the Moyes era.

Even if results really go the wrong way and the Mags get into Europe and we don't, that is what we expected at the start of the season.

League cup final, multiple play-off games, key relegation or promotion games, the cost of failure for all of these was far greater.

Mags can't get into Europe

Best they can hope for is to finish 9th, above us by 1 point. That's the best case scenario for them now, which itself is hilarious

Biggest game for decades wa sorobaboy the league 1 playoff final. Then the championship 1. Then maybe Sunday.

The league cup final was bigger than both in my opinion. A game to actually win proper silverware that would have been added to the clubs record of achievement forever .

All other games are just to get to a "next level"

It would be a huge milestone to finally get back into Europe. But the alternative isn't a disaster at all. Losing the playoff final last year would have been - look at Sheff Utd this year. There's not the same jeopardy, getting a European spot would be the biggest achievement in my life time but if we don't get there we'll still finish in a far greater position than any of us could have dreamt of last summer.

If it doesn't come off then I'll be disappointed but still chuffed with the season we have had.

I honestly think Conference League would be a blessing not a curse. Providing we have the numbers in the squad it’d give everyone the chance to get meaningful games. Atm there’s a slight tension between selling ourselves as a place for young players to play and Le Bris’s preference for consistent line-ups and our need to stay in the Prem. European games will act like a pressure valve to keep squad harmony and ensure our young lads get exposure and the chance to improve.
