Stokes retires from ODI cricket

Would rather he packed T20 in since he isnt really in the best Xl, and had a reduced 1 day schedule given the world cup is just next year.
If this ends up giving us 3 more years of Stokes near his best as an allrounder in tests then fair dos
Can't pack in T20I cos then he might not get the IPL pay day.

Maybe that's a cynical view mind especially when talking about the absolute hero that is ben stokes.

It’s just a realistic view.

Why would someone as talented as him rule that out?

T20 doesn’t take that much out of you, he would bowl 4 overs tops if even that and bat 10 overs most games

Lots of talk of him not been in our best T20 side.

But despite his stats in T20, if we had a T20 World Cup final tomorrow he would walk in my side, he is a born winner, and more importantly a big game player when the pressure is on.

Problem with t20 is there's no specialist finishers anymore at 5/6 everyone opens or bats in the top 4 now. Bens last IPL he opened, one before that 4.

Moeen bats 3 or 4 for CSK. Livingstone batted 4 for Punjab Kings and Jonny either opened or 3

Buttler is the only guaranteed position in the whole team tbh. Everything else is completely up in the air

Openers Buttler Roy Bairstow Stokes Salt
3rd Malan Moeen Bairstow
4th Bairstow Livingstone Stokes Moeen

Yeah totally take your point it’s not ideal, but in the same breath worse problems to have than having to accommodate all those good players.

First thing I would do is open with Bairstow and if that means dropping Roy so be it.

He's there just seems like they have Buttler/Roy as the preferred partnership.

As you say worse problems to have. But it's a bit square peg round hole-ish batting anybody at 5/6/7

Maybes why Ben hasn't been as good in the format being expected to bat 5/6 due to being an all-rounder and bowling his overs too.

Whereas batting 5/6 ODI has the time to build his innings and be as good as he's been in that format. He averaged 55 with the bat between jan 2016 and the world cup win in 2019.

Yeah sorry noticed after and changed my post.

Bairstow opening is his best position and he seems so confident at the moment.

That would probably be tough on Roy, but shows what good side we have and sometimes tough choices need to be made.

Agreed about the t20, I’ve never really felt Ben had cracked that in domestic, never mind international level

strangely last night I had a read through the World Cup thread in the Gold section. There’s a cracking vid right at the end, showing a crowd view of the super over

No, he’s bowing out specifically after tomorrow
Funny how this is the general consensus in T20 (and I agree) but he’s still got an IPL MVP award to his name and was massively expensive in their auction for a long period. Think he’s another who would benefit from opening though

Not a fan of manufactured retirements.Either he's available for all 3 ODI's or none. The idea of the first being at the Riverside shouldn't matter. A sideshow which detracts from the main course.
