Staff Redundancies at SAFC

Often we are too tolerant. That being said I'm not sure what any form of protest would do at this stage. Short seemingly wants to sell, we're just not an attractive proposition for a buyer. Equally on this issue we don't know enough to be outraged yet. It's a shame people might lose their jobs but if it's in areas we simply aren't focusing on anymore there's probably no alternative. We can't exactly say "fuck me, what's the point in all this invest in Africa stuff, wish we'd just focus on being a football club" and then complain when the club concur and have to make staff involved in these areas redundant. When (if) more details come out my opinion on this might completely change but we don't know enough to criticise the club at this point imo

Do we though? There was significant fanfare on here when we began announcing concerts. I'd imagine it was always designed to benefit the club.

The expansion in to other areas was designed to spread the name of Sunderland. All of the Invest in Africa initiative was designed to spread the brand of Sunderland across the world. Look at other clubs. Teams like Man U and Liverpool have things like their own watch and vehicle partners.

The money involved in paying these peoples wages is a fraction of the overall playing staff wage bill.

Good points mate , as usual. However, my initial point wasn't really just about this. Was about our base in general. I guess you got my point with your opening sentence in the reply.

Showed the Naivety of those running the club at the time that Invest In Africa bollocks. Only one way for the brand of a club to improve and that is success on the pitch.

There's always an excuse. Always a reason why its no ones fault.

There is literally no one to hold accountable. That's the genius of it all.

And even if I were to post something negative about the state of it all, someone would be along seconds later to say we've had it so good.

It did seem baffling. I don't see the African market as being anything like as lucrative as the American or Asian but, even if I'm wrong and there was a market there, ultimately most people with no connection to a club looking for a side to support will go for one that's good (especially if it means they can also follow them in the champions league etc). Some will randomly decide to follow a struggling club like us but, as you rightly say, its success that really increases numbers of fans, not marketing and partnerships

The concerts were an income generator. I'm not sure if they have remained profitable, but you can understand the club trying to bring in extra income.

We arent the only club who do this sort of thing, and I think the way football is now perceived, it is understandable.

So if we no longer have any work for them, we should just keep employing/paying them (as harsh as that sounds, which I apologise for)...?

I still quite enjoy it tbh. Only a weeks wage pays for 9 months of every other Saturday. Chance to catch up with my mates. You missed a few good moments.

Probably not.

I guess until we know where the redundancies are being made its hard to argue one way or the other.

My main gripe is the timing, given the club paying a lot of money to take the players to New York. Maybes not as extreme as Micky Gray and his ferrari, but along the same lines.

So take away the NY trip and the timing of the redundancies would be ok then ?

They would if they had a full stadium, but it would be madness to go beyond inflation increase say £10 a season ticket to protect match day revenue

Social aspect is the only reason I bother now. Even now, everyone is dripping like flies. Less and less bother on a Saturday and just sack it off.

There will be cut backs whether we stay in the Premiership or not. Bains job is to restructure our finances / whole operation so we can become profitable. Staying in the premiership is a critical factor in stabilizing those finaces so anything that can be done to help this ( eg bonding trips to NYC ) has to be considered.
