Springwatch with Hellsbells

Went into the bird box today to take out the dead chicks.

Poor little mites. Even though the last one died on the day they all fledged he was still tiny.

But now it’s clean and who knows who might come back now. Thought the craftsmanship of the best would be something you’d all be interested in!

I’m quite amazed there were ever eight chicks in here. It’s tiny.

Nice one.
You may get lucky and get a second brood.

Loads of Blue Tit and Great Tit chicks around the garden and outside trees. They have all hatched around the same time. Believe the nuthatches have also left the nest.
Blackbirds are still taking loads of suet pellets as the ground is dry and they need that helping hand.

Keeping the grey squirrel, magpie and crow population down as best I can.

We have a migratory Whitethroat close by, belting out his song every day.

The Whitethroat call.
Different from the more popular Black Cap.

I was putting the washing out earlier and a Red Kite came over the house very low.

It stayed in the vicinity long enough for me to shout for the missus Q to come and see.

Not a rare bird by any stretch - there are close to hundreds on the Derwent and Tyne Valley but its very unusual to see one around this part of Co Durham (Bish/Crook)

Another tick on my 'Garden List'

😀

A few years back, we had a red kite that came and lived in a tree at the end of our street for about a week or so. It was bizarre seeing it swooping about over the street.

We have a huge Red Kite population here in Hertfordshire for some reason. I often sit on a work video call facing the window and watch them hover and soar over the garden and woods nearby. Gorgeous birds.

Odd seeing them in a setting you don't normally.

A lad on my team at work lives near the M1 corridor and they are plentiful round there. He had his sandwich snatched out of his hand by one a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think he managed to 'karate chop' it mind 😀

Loads here as we are North on the M40 up from Buckinghamshire, the most populated Red Kite area in the UK.
They prefer carrion, different from the Buzzard.
They appear to have no problem though sharing territory with the Buzzard.

Watched this Morning as they were cutting down the grass fields for hay.
10 Red Kites circling in search of a free meal.
This afternoon a few Buzzards high up in the sky circling in the thermals.

Think there was a song thrush or mistle thrush in my garden today.

Probably not that rare but I don't recall seeing one before. Are they? I think that's what it was? Looked like a larger starling with long legs but a more coloured leopard print belly.

Just found a snail and battered it off a stone.
