Southampton spying compendium thread

Sometimes team lineups are leaked on here. The team was posted on here by 2 different people the night before the derby, revealing we had nobody back from injury.

Its probably not much different
That is not breaking a rule and nobody was charged with it

These have been charged with an offence against a team they have beaten

I know how Boro will feel and i would feel exactly the same if it was us

And thats fair enough, it doesn't mean I have to feel the same. I think they should be punished, but not sure handing Boro a place in the final is the answer.

They gained a clear sporting advantage for that first leg doing something that is strictly against the rules. Simple answer is for them forfeit the first leg.
I wouldn’t say it’s clear they gained any advantage either. Who knows what they learned that they didn’t know already. Who knows who else is at it. Agree they’ve done something against the rules like, but name a club that hasn’t.

Ok then you tell yourself that but we all know Keith that you would be livid if we had lost to Coventry last season and they had been found guilty and charged with the offence. I know I would anyway but if you say not then i will take your word for it
No, I wouldn't, I would be far more interested in what happened during the actual game.

Exactly. They were trying to gain an advantage but if they were playing pretty much the same players in the same shape as most teams do in training you're gaining nothing.

Totally disagree. It's a very marginal advantage. It's more important how your team play rather than the opposition.

A manager being anal thinking he's gaining some sort of advantage doesn't mean he's actually getting an advantage. Did the spying lead to a cross creeping into the goal to win the game? Did it fuck.

How many goals come from set pieces ?
How you both attack and defend them can be critical to a games outcome.
Any change in shape can catch a team out, from how high they press to how low they defend.
Who and how players practice penalties is of course a massive potential advantage… or why do they put the details on water bottles.
This is going to go the way of Swindon and Sunderland back in the day. The decision will be after the final and Hull will be promoted

But Boro have to assume they’ve seen everything. They very easily could have seen starting line up, formations. Hell they could even have seen all of Boro’s set piece routines.

Boro had like 10 days of training after their final game before the playoffs. What if the manager had decided to play a totally different formation that Southampton were expecting? Yet suddenly they know about this change and set up for it

Next time we have a big game i might Infiltrate the academy and claim i was working for somebody.

Means we can piss and moan wanting free wins when we get beat

But they (probably) didn't. Let's face it 9/10 you're not going to come up with brand new plans for an important game. You're going to play your best team and play the usually way that the players are used to.

OK you might have new set piece routines but you probably haven't. Boro will have played pretty much as they normally do. For some bizzare reason the Soton manager wanted to spy on them? Even if you know what the opposition are going to do it still doesn't follow that you can stop them.

I think it's bizarre to spy because there is very little to be gained from doing it. Even Bielsa said it was silly to do it but he was just dotting the i's and crossing the t's due to paranoia in case he missed a trick.

Wonder if Boro had gone darn sarth and done it to them we’d be in this position. Nope, they’d have said kick the thick Northern b@st@rds out, the less of them the better

It is Cheating

They have been charged

A very early and quick punishment should happen

I can understand how Boro will be feeling cos I know i would be feeling the same

For me they have to be kicked out and Boro in the final cos if not its going to just make it worse for the EFL when another team get involved

You are not making sense Keith… why are you defending cheating.
Did they cheat and break the laws of the game? YES
Did the benefit they got from that act potentially benefit them in the subsequent game ? YES
What punishment should they receive? Given the insight could be game winning, it has to be the game forfeited…. Otherwise every other club would be mad not to do it.

The game is driven by data and marginal gains your stance is rather old school.

Should be a points deduction next season whichever league they’re in. They can’t give Boro a 3-0 win or expel Southampton surely. Seems incredibly excessive given Middlesbrough still had 210 minutes to win the game on the pitch.
