Southampton spying compendium thread

I’m really surprised at the reaction to this tbh. Wasn’t this kind of thing relatively routine a decade or so ago. Saw the headline the other day and sort of shrugged. Wasn’t expecting people suggesting expulsion from the playoffs over it.

Honestly wouldn't expect to go through a tie we had lost over 2 legs.
So a team have spied on us and been charged and then beat us and you say you would be ok with that and just move on ?
Totally.

We played against Man Utd last game pretty much the same way as we have all season. Same shape, pretty much the same first choice players bar Ballard who was suspended. What would anyone have gained knowing that prior to kick off knowing that? Fuck all IMO.
So a team have spied on us and been charged and then beat us and you say you would be ok with that and just move on ?

But it did get detected and its impact was therefore limited.
Boro might have had to change the way they played because plan a was fucked due to the cheating opponents. Boro disadvantaged right away.

The fact is it is explicitly in the rules that you cannot do this. Southampton chose to break the rules and cheat. The penalties can be anything from a fine to expulsion from the competition.

Aye. Don't believe we should be put through in a tie that we have lost.

Impact of the spying would have been minimal. He was caught.

EFL also need to take into account the penalty must set a precedent here moving forward. Anything less than expulsion/forfeit from first leg and surely every team will be doing for the money and gains from it.
It’s a bit of a stretch to suggest watching a training session equals gaining promotion. It’s only marginally more helpful than watching their games

Aye but people won't rest if it is a fine, despite that being one of the punishments listed.

I've got no issue with them being punished. I just don't think boro should be handed promotion on a plate

Will admit having read this thread that I'm impressed with the majority here * especially against a huge local rival ;) * in saying that the only possible penalty is for Southampton to be kicked out. How can it not be. How many times do you see a well worked corner routine etc. that results in a goal. Multiply that by the entire training session and you may be able to nullify everything we've worked on. Even if we don't get to go to Wembley, just promote Hull. Southampton are disgusting cheats and have clearly been at it throughout their "great run".
You’re welcome. Sick of cockney teams taking over every division. Would love you back up. Great the banter when all 3 of us up 👍

I wanted Boro to win tonight - unlike my take on that lot up the road, I have always wanted them to do well, going back to the days of Stan Anderson and John Hickton. However, with regard to 'spygate' I am in the minority. Games are decided by a flash of brilliance, a moment of madness, a lucky bounce or a refereeing decision. Tonight, Southampton constantly cheated on the field and if they had succeeded in conning the referee that would have had a larger bearing on the result than any tactics board.

Winning football matches is usually about the best team on the day. We were the best team on Saturday but could have lost the game in the final few minutes. That's football.

Total storm in a teacup.

haha I mean as if this is how you would react

I have seen how you react when we miss a chance in the match day threads man

So answer the question then you would not react and just say oh well move on ?

In wouldn't have a problem with it.

Spying doesn't have some huge effect on a game. It's totally pointless 99 times out of a 100.

OK fair enough if you normally play 4-4-2 and decided to go 5 at the back and maybe a young kid upfront on his todd who was 6'6" instead of your usual 5'7" striker I could see that would be a slight advantage. However, most teams play pretty much the same shape and style week in week out.

I can see a Swindon situation here. Saints will win the final and end up being demoted. Pure guess work but something feels off about Southampton, won't be surprised if they've been doing this for months. That Tonda is weird as fuck.

Ok then you tell yourself that but we all know Keith that you would be livid if we had lost to Coventry last season and they had been found guilty and charged with the offence. I know I would anyway but if you say not then i will take your word for it
