Striker
I agree that they're very poor strikers but they''ve not been helped by the tactics. From the first game of the season the die was cast, we were the better team everywhere bar the penalty box. The plan seemed to be to rely on Clarke and Roberts to get shots off from 18 yards. Fair enough, but any other angle of attack was cut out - the clue was the fact that the full backs were just sat and so the chances of a cross coming in from an effective position were basically zero. Last season Cirkin & Hume got forward and joined in which made it much harder to defend. But yes the strikers aren't very good either.
First game was Ipswich- they were strong and compact and had a pattern of play, with two or three passes absolutely cutting us open when they needed to. We went ahead when they'd been clean through a few times. They eventually went ahead and let us have the ball, but we got little change out of them centrally. They were better than us. I didn't think it would last but they've added to it and it has.
Yes we play with wingers and yes we're reliant on them, but being largely one dimensional is a by product of not having the quality or experience elsewhere. We often try other things, it doesn't work and we revert to type.
Early season and in that game we'd actually went to something resembling a 433. It's been mentioned a lot by the likes of Speakman and used this season at times and uts likely half the reason for the 'non' centre forwardswe seem intent on buying.
In it we had Ekwah sitting and Jobe left, Neil right and as a result the fullbacks were given limitations, which is natural to not leave yourself open in wide areas and for them to sit in midfield, but hasn't worked when operated mostly this season, players dont understand it or cant operate it and we've abandoned it until recently again.
However in other spells and like yesterday fullbacks certainly were overlapping, but we've also spent the majority of the season without Alese and Cirkin and with Hume on the left. When Huggins was available he got forward as much as anyone so to say 'the die has been cast' is completely wrong.
We're too naive, lack strength and experience being too naive in key areas and weve had key injuries. For too long individual brilliance has got us out of situations because we lack key ingredients despite large percentages of possession, were just really not good enough whichever system we play and the strikers are a large part of that as they don't aid team play and they don't nick us goals. The upshot of that is you then retract and become reliant on the quality you do possess.
