SOL expansion

While the Saudis are stumbling and stalling over their plans for increasing capacity we need to take advantage.

Like it or not a sizable part of our catchment area is mixed and shared with that lot but unlike them we can extend easily.

It needs to happen imo.
I was in the home end on Saturday and was struck by how miserable and detached the home fans were and the tiny number of kids there compared to the SoL.

High demand from tourists, no concessions for kids, well over 30% corporate are forcing locals and the next generation out.

I don’t want tourist money stopping our kids going just because you can squeeze them for more cash.

We cannot afford to let that happen to us so more season tickets at concessionary prices and in fact more seats in an extended ground asap imho.

I don’t think we’ve quite got the same tourist pull as any London club or Man United, City or Liverpool.

The club will have to be careful with the reduction of concessions. We’re still socioeconomically one of the poorest clubs in the league (if not the poorest).

Every time the camera panned out to fans next to throw ins the vast majority looked like barely interested tourists as opposed to proper fans, you could just tell they didn’t look that bothered.

The uni party has served Sunderland and the area so well.
This unwavering support for what was the Labour party, is destructive.
But many won't see it. They blame the Tories, who were completely inept. And Labour are just continuing it.
The bottom is calling lads and lasses...

I see Arsenal keen to extend emirates, always thought that was a finished stadium.
Yeah I was reading about it, didn’t realise the emirates pitch was below concourse level like the SOL, was an interesting read the extension would do away with the middle tier and just have two larger tiers

There is a podcast with Bob Murray talking about David Dein the then Arsenal Co-Owner/Vice Chairman being blown away by the Stadium of Lights design on his first visit and when Arsenal started planning the Emirates he had the Architects and design team come up to the SoL. The Etihad is the same, lower tier is below ground but thats more to do with how they revamped it after the Commonwealth Games as the Lower Tier didn't exist.

It was John Fickling Podcast not Bob Murray......1:04 onwards

The number of new modern grounds or existing grounds getting a large revamp is growing. We will have a decision to make as a ground almost 30 years old in the current era is dated and if we ever have aspirations to be a top side in the league regularly we could really do with a newer model ground. I can only think of where we might play if it was renovated, Chelsea might need to play at Wembley for 4 years or so if they go for their major uplift.

What the actual fuck are you on about?

Blimey, that's a steep top tier! Basically looks like a full rebuild. Guessing it'll be the same height all the way round at the top, rather than the wavy top tier they have now.

I think they took advice from old Bob M when designing the sol ..concrete is cheaper than steel approach!I think you always lose space under the stands when you do it that way!Any extension at the sol will not be a vanity project but a business decision and will be done in the most economical way closely sticking to Bobs original ideas!Bob should have been a builder not footy owner in a past life!

Bottom line is the demand is there and a generation of younger fans will be lost if we don’t , it’s a mad scramble trying to get tickets currently . Cheapest and least risk , I assume , is to extend south stand and would add 4-5k ??
Also risk of sheepfold developments .
Show ambition and do it while can
