SOL expansion

Luckily I think our owners are more ambitious than a lot of our fans are
It’ll get extended whether we like it or not.
You’re not wrong. This was 2020

We’ve learned some people are more concerned what the mags think of us if we extended and had some empty seats than wanting the club to grow
It’s pathetic is t it….. oooh what will the mags think if we go down and average 40k in a 55k stadium 😀😂. We need to think that we’ll do a Villa, Brentford, Bournemouth and kick on after promotion.
Like any other club in the world actually gives a sh!t.

The trouble with the idea to extend is that Sunderland are in the Championship / League 1 more than in the Premier League and when we are in the Premier is usually at the bottom.

So I still think we need to see sustained comfortable top flight finishes before even considering it. Although this has the potential to be a good period for the club, so did the Reidy years and before we knew it we were down again, then up then down etc.

Our next stadium needs to have adjustable capacity to cover our ups and downs
Thats old game thinking mate !KLD obviously has plans for this club above survival and i dont think he will let a few fans who cannot keep up effect his plans for the club! We are aiming for the European places (perhaps not this year but the next)and kld has the means and will to get us there!and we need a stadia to match!

I think it is but mainly because it’s attractive to a wider group of people now.

I’ve found that particularly amongst the middle classes/professionals it’s probably the most popular it’s ever been.

I can remember starting work in 2000 and a lot of my Directors (particularly down South) would turn up their nose a bit when they knew I had a season ticket at “the football”. Rugby was definitely the go to sport.

Now when I speak to people who are counterparts/team members across the country there seems a bit of kudos attached to going to the match.

Often during those painful Monday morning chats about people’s weekends, there seems a genuine interest in what match people have gone to or if they watched the “Super Sunday”.

Of course the majority of them have memberships at Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Utd and are forever moaning about not getting tickets 😂

I’m off to Serbia on Monday with England and it’s quite funny when I speak to some of them and they are trying to recommend places to eat Belgrade. In reality I will be spending my time being bussed to and from the stadium to avoid getting my head kicked in 😂

Yes there was a time admitting to people you did business with that you were off to watch Sunderland was almost a shoot yourself in the foot moment in terms of credibility.
Now everyone wears a shirt to the match whatever your age or background without fear of judgement
25- 30 years ago I remember being ridiculed at work as a ‘grown man wearing a shirt to the match’
The only people who would find it strange now are the metropolitan socialist elites from London… whose minds say racists as soon as they see a football shirt

This is once in 20 years. There needs to be a bigger sample size before the club will out down £50m or whatever.

If we go down, you'll have 5k empty seats already as the stadium is.
Every club in premier could say the same , relegated and crowds drop
Plenty seats for the cup games that no one apparently wants to go to. We're on a high after promotion, it will likely tail off if the team dont continue on an upward trajectory
Over past 20 year the domestic cups have lost their “magic” unfortunately

Some would lose far more of a percentage than we did. The mags lost over 10,000 while still in the premier league and had finished mid table the 2 seasons prior (their average historical position). If they got relegated and stayed out of the Premier League for 8 seasons 1,000s of the plastics would disappear over that time.

As for the cups, aye it's lost the magic due to the 2nd string teams put out as there's no money in it compared to Premier League. Even finishing 1 place higher in the PL is worth more than getting to the League Cup final. Though winning it being a route into Europe should still be an attraction for some clubs. Though again the extra games for the financial gain of the European games isn't as great as getting into the Champions League.

I think if we do it you might as well do the east and south together, which would be about 65k ?, but I can see a huge increase in hospitality so it might add an extra 10k general admission seats to what’s on sale now. The stadium would then be on par with the top clubs in the country in terms of capacity and hospitality offering
I have a feeling Cyril is going to do it

Looks like we will sell out every single home game this season. If we stay up I reckon the club will extend the stadium.
They will have to if we are, as is the plan, to be an established top 10 premiership team. Also gives us the opportunity to sweep up young fans who are currently unable to attend games at the Stadium of Light as well the S**t tip.
I doubt I’ll get to any this season tbh. Which is ok if it helps get a kid who’d be sitting at home watching on a dodgy feed get hooked.

Occasionally 4999 as I’ll come back home on a whim a lot more than I’ll be doing this season.

These days, they lock you up and throw you in jail just for wearing a Sunderland top.

I said these days, they’ll lock you up and throw you in jail. Just for wearing a Sunderland top.

I said these days…

But we were getting 35k or so last season.

These are fair weather fans who would/will desert us at the first sign of poor form.
I think regardless of what might or might not happen if we go down in the future, it is desperately important at this moment in time to make sure there is enough room for the next generation of supporters to be able to attend matches.

If we don’t get this generation of supporters hooked now they will be gone for good and we know where they will end up going…

Im on about from the clubs POV. Club said at a talk in few weeks back that if it continues we will need to look into options. But there's nowt planned soon.

They won't be hoying £50m or whatever at an extension unless its definitely needed.

You've just said yourself averaging 40k. But its a 47/48k seater. That isn't going to persuade the money men to hoy tens of millions on more seats.
Averaging 40k in the Championship. Sold out both home games so over 46k, and limited by the inanity of having to exclude several hundred (thousand?) seats due to stupid segregation policies. The demand is there, it needs to be filled.

i personally think that you can judge the supply and demand by the cups games.

looking at the big clubs these games are normally the games where 'locked out ' fans can get the tickets.

we just manage to get 15k-20k

I think some people are getting wayyy too ahead of themselves with the extension idea. we need a good 5/6 years of solid sell outs before the club will entertain the idea IMO

also we if we still in the prem next season we should set up a membership for fans without season cards. charge £30 a year and match day sale will only go on sale to these members, or a ballot for more high profile games.
