SOL expansion

It’s not just for football though we’ve supposedly missed out on gigs because of the lack of premium seats. Football is just one aspect of it. They could really rejuvenate the concourses in the southstand too while they were at it. I really think if we stay up they’ll be looking into doing it within the next 18 months or so. This whole council business just adds to it. £50m or whatever it turns out to be is an investment that will be worth it outside of just football. We need to be proactive as if and when the sand dancers get their act together that stadium will attract more gigs so we need to be ready to offer competitive venue.

If it's all about gigs then im not sure what the south stand expansion will add as it'll be behind where the stage goes. Even with these central stages people keep mentioning, there's still a stage at one end usually.

I'd love to see it happen but the attendances need to stick for more than 5 minutes. The club have basically said that

Totally agree, we saw what happened when they were a mid table & sustainable PL club struggling to compete like the rest of us. God knows how they would have behaved if they endured what we have.
 
I think if KLD is planning to be here a long time (considering his age could well be 20-30 years who knows) it makes a bit more sense to build now rather than later. Got to be honest this time last year I’d have said not a chance but I’m not so sure now, we had some good players in our last stint in the prem but we never really had a good team, none that ever lasted anyway. It’s like the Avengers assemble now class players and depth in every position on the pitch and that’s what puts bums on seats a competitive team who battles every game. Still early days yet but this team hasn’t even got going yet they’re only going to get better imho.
 
The trouble with the idea to extend is that Sunderland are in the Championship / League 1 more than in the Premier League and when we are in the Premier is usually at the bottom.

So I still think we need to see sustained comfortable top flight finishes before even considering it. Although this has the potential to be a good period for the club, so did the Reidy years and before we knew it we were down again, then up then down etc.

Our next stadium needs to have adjustable capacity to cover our ups and downs :lol:
 
I agree currently we’d love and benefit so much from a bigger ground. But that’s after an 8 year hiatus and being served up utter crap relatively speaking.

Enthusiasm and attendances dropped off in the last PL run of 10 years. We lost more than we won, and it became predictable. That Ji game for example a kick off at 3pm on New Year’s Day we got just over 40k. It also became easier to get away tickets during that 10 year period as it wore on, as I well know being a southern based fan who doesn’t have a season ticket.

I’d love the ground to be extended but we need to step back and think about this. We’re 4 games into a new affair, an extension is like being 10 years married.

We’ve learned some people are more concerned what the mags think of us if we extended and had some empty seats than wanting the club to grow

I think if we do it you might as well do the east and south together, which would be about 65k ?, but I can see a huge increase in hospitality so it might add an extra 10k general admission seats to what’s on sale now. The stadium would then be on par with the top clubs in the country in terms of capacity and hospitality offering

I’m not sure that Ji game is a great example - there’s no public transport on NYD.

My thinking exactly. Just finish the stadium and maximise our turnover. Stadiums don’t have to sell out every game, but should be big enough to cater for the big games.

Just don’t make the seats in the upper east stand available for season cards and sell match by match. Cover the seats with sponsorship when they aren’t needed - although currently I don’t think that would be very often!
