Walked past St James a few weeks ago. It really is like Death Star II. A massive grey hulking seemingly half built brute in the sky above the city.
Saw Vader as well but he was just a passing perv who liked to dress up.

Both true...the windows were indeed cleaned and stadiums need maintenance. What upkeep has been done to SOL?
In addition to cleaning the windows during last summer the following was undertaken at SJP:
- All concourses were painted black and white with large poster boards added for decoration
- an in-door warm-up area was added next to the dressing room
-The statue of Alan Shearer was moved next to Sir Bobby Robson’s
- Shearers Bar got its name back
- The Terrace bar got a facelift
It is probable that other work that I have not spotted or was not aware of was also undertaken during this period (e.g. minor repairs/maintenance etc)
Since then NUFC have announced they bought back the land at Strawberry place with a view to creating a fan park (expect to see this next season) and with the longer term goal of expanding the Gallowgate End. They have been clear in stating a desire to invest in every aspect of the stadium from expansion right down to better food and drink options.

It’s obvious to anyone that Newcastle’s owners have big ambitions for the club and are willing to do huge things both on and off the pitch. They’ve made their intentions very clear and have taken steps to fulfilling them.
However, it’s equally obvious as to why they’re doing it and that’s the square you’ve got to circle.
They also have big ambitions to sportswash the thickest, most gullible ,zero morals fanbase around.

Wow what an original and insightful response, I haven't heard that one here before, honest. I can only assume you don't fancy telling me all the improvements done to the SOL. Just as I have seen absolutely no rational explanation given as the why the SOL would have been selected above SJP for the Euros.
Similarly when I posted last night that many of you seem to now prefer the Euros to be held in Turkey (a country with a very dubious human rights record) thus depriving 5 entire nations of hosting games just so a few games are not held at SJP, what reply did you manage to come back with:
As I said last night there is not much rational debate here if ultimately you always resort to (A) "Sportswashing" or (B) "go back to your own board" as your final get-out clause to any discussion that paints NUFC in any kind of good light.

There are loads of rational explanations on the thread as to why Sunderland hasn’t been awarded it but obviously it suits the narrative to go with a ‘bitter SMBs’ take. There is a big thread on the forum about our stadium and improvements that are required. Most are aware that Newcastle’s existing infrastructure is greater than Sunderland’s. None of the chosen locations are that controversial really (Casement Park perhaps but there are political and geographical balances to be struck there).
However, if the FA and government wanted the tournament to have a bit more of a legacy, going with the Stadium of Light and perhaps other venues (perhaps Plymouth for example which is an often forgotten city in the south west) would have been far more innovative, creative and ambitious. Sunderland as a city is more than capable of putting on a few games of football and the infrastructure is rapidly improving. By 2028 the city will look very different. This tournament could have pushed that on even more.

Unfortunately for you “sportswashing” is the beginning and end of any debate. You can’t get around it and time doesn’t change it. You will always be the lapdog club of monsters, being used as propaganda for a cynical state project. Enjoy.
I agree mostly, but that is the opposite of the question I asked isn't it? I asked for rational reasons why the SOL should have got it above SJP (not vice versa)

I really don't understand why some of you lot are bothered. The stadium has been half empty when tournament games are staged there. The only benefit is your ground might get a bit of a spruce up. For those of us who started life standing on the Gallowgate or Roker ends a roof and not having to pledge through an inch of piss is all that's needed to satisfy us.
Personally I am not overly bothered but it seems some people are very, very bothered. I mean preferring Turkey to host just so SJP does not host games sounds pretty bothered doesn't it? (although I accept that is probably not the view of the majority of Sunderland fans, likely just a daft minority)
Oh and that reminds me as you mentioned standing - 1800 safe standing places to be introduced to SJP next season. Good to see standing coming back into the game finally.

I gave you reasons. There is potential for legacy first and foremost. Usually, tournament selection likes some of that. Secondly, the SoL (and the city) has demonstrated its capacity to put on big matches, events and shows in the recent past. Large scale music events come to Sunderland with up to 60k coming to the stadium and city.
Let’s face it, if either the SoL or St James are to be filled it’s predominantly going to be people from the Tyneside and Wearside region that will be filling it. I don’t think Newcastle’s hotel advantage is going to be that big a deal.

I think all of you have valid points but we're getting too technical here. (Although the technicalities are correct).
I believe its far more basic.
When the rest of the country thinks of the North East they only and blindly think of Newcastle.
Just as when Europe or the World think of England they think of London.
Newcastle always has a subconscious head start in the minds of whoever chooses venues or destinations for anything North East based.

Thay are all valid reasons why the SOL could host the Euros, but they are not reasons why SOL should be picked above SJP. Every one of those reasons could be applied to SJP too.
Don’t see why both can’t stage at least one game. Same as Celtic Park and Ibrox. These places have far more football heritage than Cardiff and Belfast as well.

The could and should are quite obviously interchangeable. The SoL should host it because there is a proven track record of hosting major events beyond just football and sport. The city of Sunderland should be given the opportunity to host to demonstrate its capability of hosting these events and to show off its recently developed riverside and city infrastructure. The SoL should host because there aren’t any controversial issues with state ownership of the club.

Because the bid was for 5 nations together so there had to be at least one stadium in Scotland, one in Ireland, in NI, and one in Wales.
So the only reason you have really is the ownership of the NUFC. Thanks for clarifying.
