I do not see a problem with going back to the old normal as soon as everyone over 50 has been vaccinated.
The problem we have is that the government and scientists are very risk averse. Already there is what I perceive to be scaremongering with constant speculation about the virus mutating into something that would render vaccines less effective.
I feel that come the summer the massive backlog within the NHS and the fear of a winter flu season will prevent the government from allowing us to get back to normal.
There may be a hidden agenda. The government may see this constant restriction of personal freedom as a means of educating the masses to change their lifestyles.
Jetting off to Spain at short notice on a cheap flight for a three day binge may be a thing of the past.
Hundreds of thousands have taken up jogging.
Working from home reduces traffic and public transport congestion.
Some old fashioned boozers may disappear.
We may very close to adopting a continental cafe culture.
The world is changing. I hope it does not change too much.
The government have been slow to lockdown on a number of occasions, due to wanting to protect the economy.
They'll want to get out of lockdown as soon as its feasible to get the economy back up running.
The scientists do err on the side of caution, but their job is purely medical advice so they dont generally consider the economic side of things.
Being risk adverse doesn't really come into it as theres 2 different risks (health & economic) which somewhat conflict each other. It's the politicians job to make a judgement in getting that balance right.
