SMB Tennis thread

I'll do my usual and watch the first women's match and follow the other results until around 1.45/2ish and then get up and watch the rest of it until 2pm or so. I'm off all this week so has worked out OK. Wish the time difference meant it started an hour or two earlier though. Will mainly watch the Svitolina match (as that is a good math up) and have Kostyuk's match on in the background.

You staying up for much?
I need to sort Eurosport player I will watch whatever is on the TV until 4ish got no plans tomorrow.

It's excellent. I got it in just before the US Open for a year for £19.99 so was class for that, this one and will cover the French Open in May as well. I see Amazon Prime have the US Open from 2018 onwards so I'll have to sort that. But aye, the Player is perfect quality, has replays, you can easily put it back (and then forward) 30 seconds a time as well - really handy.

I'm not sure what is on Eurosport 1 and 2 schedule, although I'd be shocked if Svitolina's wasn't one of them. Spain's Eurosport is showing Svitolina and Pavlychenkova's matches so I'd imagine UK would do that as well and then one switches over to Edmund around 2am.

Il see what's on the TV I might try the stream I watched the ashes and darts on.

It wasted half my weekly betting fund on rubbish bets but just won a 12/1 so plenty money for tennis now

I actually that:eek:

It's a shame how out of all the members on this forum, there's literally only about 5 or 6 who like tennis. I genuinely prefer it to football these days, particularly the slams. Probably due to Sunderland being shite, but still.

Good start from the young'un, has been broken back, but Rogowska isn't up to much so a cracking chance to get to the next round and if it is vs compatriot Svitolina, then that will be a hell of a moment for her. Another break :)

I'm a good all-rounder love football, cricket, tennis, darts, golf I will watch most stuff to be fair I'm watching the pavlychenkova game.

This Rogowska is absolutely awful, just constant unforced error after error, would be one of the worst 3rd rounders in a long time if she comes through this.

Bencic gone! Thought she would have cruised through that one. Edmund played well. Karlovic pushing close to 50 aces, I would hate to play him.

Karlovic is old school. Makes Isner and Anderson look like tennis whippets. Fair play to him, he's 38 and still in the top 100 but he's dreadful to watch.

Edmund could go a good distance here... also surprised by Bencic but it's amazing how often someone gets a big win then fails to follow up.

Still just about catching up. Just on to the evening stuff now although I know Dimitrov survived a real scare to win in 5 including a 0-6 in set 4 to someone who has just been playing with the likes of Norrie on the US Challenger scene of late. Rublev will fancy his chances there of another GS win over Dimitrov in the next round.

Real shame about Bencic. Her movement and footwork were poor today, Kumkhum probably was the best to come through qualifying, but that's a bad result. So often the case, you'll have a fantastic win but then don't back it up in the next round - was a real chance for her to progress fairly deep as well.

Fantastic fight by Wozniakci. 1-5 15-40 down in the third set with Fett serving for the match, but came back to win 7-5. Fett must be absolutely gutted, but you've got to hand it to Woz. Svitolina had a harder match on paper and also came back from a set down and now has that 15 year old (all Ukraine affair) in the third round. Kostyuk looked absolutely spent in her match, so I'd be very surprised if she manages to take more than 4 games, but it's one I'm very interested in. Ostapenko also through in 3.

Doesn't look like there have been any shocks in the men's - Nadal, Cilic and Kyrgios all through. Saw bits of the Tsonga-Shapovalov match and the young'un will be disappointed not to come through, but all good experience I suppose. I'd have liked to have seen Shap vs Kyrgios in the next round. Obviously great news about Edmund as well, didn't even face a break point all match and was on court less than 2 hours.

Didn't see any of the Karlovic match but so hard to break those type of players and you won't many break points per set. You'd probably expect those 2 to meet in the last 16. Yeah was gutted with the Bencic result but it was like chalk and cheese to the other day. She's still had an excellent 4 or 5 months though and she will have got more ranking points and prize money than some would have expected once the draw was made.

Some very good looking matches tonight.

Konta down the pecking order there. I thought she had have had Keys' spot. I think I will the first set of her match tonight and see how it goes.

Tougher test tonight for Novak.

Big meltdown from Gavrilova

Was avoiding this as I saw Gavrilova mentioned but just caught up now (I was out this afternoon so didn't just watch 10 hours straight ). 5-0 up and 8 set points wasted in that first set. I felt a bit sorry for Mertens at 5-0 as it wasn't really that type of match, but certainly didn't expect her to take 13 of the next 16 games :lol:.

Mertens will be favourite to take that little section and make the QFs now that Bencic and Georges both fell today. Risky planning paths as Bencic and Goerges were both big favourites in their respective matches, but Svitolina's potential path to a slam SF will now be that 15 y/o next, Allertova/Linette in the L16 and then one of Mertens/Cornet/Kumkum/Martic in the QFs - not one seed amongst those and she is now 9/2 favourite to take the title. I backed her at 15/2 - did you put any money on her after tipping her?

Cornet must be one of the most infuriating player to follow. She was brilliant today and you'd think top 10 standard and she has some huge victories, like Serena at Wimbledon the other year, but then the next minute reverts to type going back to a top 40 standard player.

Yeah, thought she would have been higher as well with the Aussie links. Probably a bigger name than Keys (well no less anyway) and both are expected to win - I wouldn't say Alexandrova was enough to swing it. Not complaining though as I'll get to see that one live at 12am rather than it being on around 5am like Keys will be and having to watch the next morning.

I think the court Konta is on is down to her opponent, not her. Pera is 390 in the world and a surprising qualifier, whilst Keys plays Alexandrova who seems to be a player on the rise.

She's 123 mate, you were looking at her doubles ranking ;), Alexandrova is now back down in the 90's after flirting with the 60/70s for a bit. I've never really been convinced by her. A few were tipping her to give Muguruza problems at Wimbledon last year, but lost routinely and hasn't done anything since. Apart from a decent serve, she is a bit limited. I do think she has slightly more chance of the upset tonight although you can never tell with Konta - I don't know about you, but I always find it uncomfortable watching her (Konta) play for some reason.
