SMB Tennis thread

Seem to have been a lot of retirements in the men's singles today: the Polish lad vs Niskikori, Kokkinakis, Gulbis, Munar, Jaziri. Three of them were heading to defeat anyway but both Kokkinakis and Gulbis were a set up but a break down...

Finally just about caught up on Round 1 :).

Women's side - great comeback from Halep recovering from a set and a break down against a dangerous opponent. Not too many surprises or big name casualties; I'd say Goerges losing was the biggest shock of the round. #10 Kasatkina was well beaten, but she's lost every match so far this season including to an Aussie WC the other week. Seeds Ostapenko and Buzarnescu also fell, but they were both underdogs in their respective matches. Great to see the emerging youngsters Yastremska, Anisimova, Potapova, Andreescu and Swiatek all come through, as well as the likes of Osaka and Sabalenka, who are much more established.
Also pleased Konta and Boulter came through (both in super tie breaks, the only ones on the women's side), but it'll be tough for either to progress further. Not beyond Jo, but doubt Katie stands much chance against Sabalenka.

Men's side - Only 4 of the 32 seeds fell. Isner losing to Opelka (at this stage) is a surprise - crazy to think Isner would actually get dwarfed by anyone . Edmund and Cecchinato also lost, but I think both were a bit over ranked with surprise slam semi final runs last year and Edmund will now fall to (IMO) a more natural ranking - Berdych was the favourite in their match so it was an unlucky draw for him. He lost both matches at Indian Wells and Miami last year so doesn't have any points to defend until April, so he at least won't slip any further. Pretty much all the much talked about promising youngsters came through, albeit most were seeded so they would have expected to get to at least the 3rd round.
Evans the last remaining Brit and while his journey will likely end next, he's come through quals, won a main draw match, picked up 110 ranking points, a lot of cash and has a nothing to lose match with Federer on RLA to look forward to.

A few good matches to look forward to in round 2 - Djokovic-Tonga, Raonic-Stan, Anderson-Tiafoe as well as Serena-(rejuvenated) Bouchard, Muguruza-Konta and Kontaveit-Sasnovich, but round 3 is where it should really start to hot up and it'll obviously be less congested.

Nice little fiver won to spend on tomorrow's betting il catch you later marra

Who / what did you have on mate?

Good lad, nice when a bet comes in so there's more to play with for later.

I am generally 80:20 women:men at this stage. Always keep on eye on the men's and watch highlights and stuff, but don't properly get invested until the last 16. I did see all the Murray match the other day, that was class, and recorded Eurosport through the night so saw most of the (Alex) Zverev and Shapovalov's matches today, but they were generally pretty comfortable.

I was watching a bit of that one at work today. Very good match and a late finish. Be interesting to see what he can do this tournament.

Federer potentially playing back to back day session matches at the Australian Open for the first time in a million years, absolute scenes. Bit of a kick in the teeth for Dan Evans to not get the night session match.

Not sure what Eurosport will be showing, but think I'll start off with Tsitsipas. Hopefully they show it on one of the main channels.

Aye, they've probably gone with the right choices so that there is a men's and women's match on at the same time, Tsitsi on Eurosport 2 and Sloane on ES1, I'll be mainly watching the latter.

Who you betting on

I've got a 6 fold with a bunch of favourites, majority like 1/4, but I put Kontaveit on @ 6/5 to boost it up a bit. Just a £2.50 free bet. Think it's around 13/2.

What you got?

You can get 9/1 for Boulter to win (Betway), I just hope it's not another Sharapova-Dart type result.

Who you betting on
Basilashvilli, Kontaveit, Opelka, Khachanov, Vekic, Verdasco. £2.50 free bet returns £14.37.

Just kontaveit and babos first set double not much else at the moment only got 13quid of my weekly funds left and wasn't much I fancied

Kontaveit had at least 5 break points that last game, but Sasnovich eventually held. Hope she doesn't regret it. I've got a big potential return if Sloane wins the title so I'm hoping for no hiccups, she has just been broken back after getting an early lead.

If she wins whole tournament how much

£220

Kontaveit just been broken so neither of our bets for today are looking too hot.

Good first set there from the Greek who's fans are in fine voice.

I was watching the Sakkari-Ostapenko match the other day and half way through the fans must have made their way from the Tsitsipas match and they were pretty loud, a bit like what Delpo gets. I see Sakkari is the next match on the same court, so I guess they'll stick around for that.
