SMB Film Thread 2026

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) - Omniplex

Prior to seeing it I was keeping expectations under control - I really enjoyed the first of this trilogy right up until the completely bonkers last 5 minutes which threw everything for a loop. Depending on how they transitioned into this film, I figured I would absolutely hate this or absolutely love it. Thankfully, it was the latter!

Terrifically good fun throughout, with brilliant performances from Ralph Fiennes and Jack O'Connell. There's a scene soundtracked to an Iron Maiden song which was one of the most purely enjoyable 4 mins of cinema I've ever seen - couldn't wipe the smile from my face!

9/10 (word of warning though, some of the violence and gruesome injury detail is really, really graphic, not one for the squeamish!)

The Housemaid (2026) - Omniplex

Boring, predictable, overlong nonsense. Every plot twist was so blatantly foreshadowed and hinted at, and the script was so lacking in subtlety it was completely patronising. Signalled from start to finish exactly what was happening at all times - basically saying "DON'T WORRY GUYS, YOU WON'T HAVE TO ENGAGE YOUR BRAIN AT ANY POINT FOR THE NEXT 140 MINUTES!"

4/10

Bulk, the latest from Ben Wheatley

Bonkers from start to finish. Brilliant, but bonkers. People trapped in multiple dimensions try and find their way out wth little success. A bit like Eraserhead, but also a lot like Space 1999.
Wow. Space 1999 meets Eraserhead?!?! Should be on the poster.

The Mastermind.
Very dull, overly slow.
I usually enjoy a slower paced film. This was simply too slow and dull. 3/10 and probably being generous.

The Rip (2026) 6/10
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck action flick. Not bad, not great. Makes Miami look like a bleak night in Stoke, and there are far too many men with beards.

Pillion (2025) 8/10
Way out of my comfort zone: the fat lad out of Harry Potter enters into a submissive gay relationship with monosyllabic biker Alexander Skarsgard. A glimpse into a very weird culture that raises awkward questions about the nature of abusive relationships. I'd read the original book, Box Hill by Adam Mars-Jones, and this does it justice.

Perfect Number (2012) 7/10
Korean adaptation of a Japanese crime novel. A reclusive maths genius overhears his neighbour murdering her estranged husband. He decides to help her cover it up, but the police are on the trail. Starts well, but drags a bit towards the end.

Is this an adaptation of The devotion of suspect x?

I only read that a couple of weeks ago and it has me down a rabbit hole of Japanese mystery books.

Just watched The Rip.

7/10 for me, good movie, good cast and enough to keep you interested until the end.
The Best You Can. 2025. Kevin Bacon.

A bit sickly sweet, woman with older man meets younger man, gets close to him, older man dies.

Was ok 5/10

The RIP, was thinking this would be another by the number's generic dirty cops film bit like Sabotage (2014), and it wasn't far off, however, I think the cast make up for it, even though you know which direction the plot is going from early on, so it's not like a big reveal at the end, you still feel invested till the end. 7/10

Thought was a solid enough B thriller and at least kept me watching. Just seemed a bit odd having two major stars in it but maybe Matt Damon made it during a break from The Odyssey hence the beard.

I think maybe they both had time to fit in this film (cash grab) in, as MD & BA like to work together, so, what the hell, get paid, have a laugh and back to their other stuff after.

Rear Window. 7/10.
I’ve started watching this loadsatimes but summets always stopped me seeing it through. A lot better than I expected. One of my favourite Hitchcocks.

We’re watching Avatar (the original) tonight as we’re taking the niece to see the latest one tomorrow and I’ve never seen it.

I expected it to be good.

What a load of predictable, yet non-sensical, shite.

Big massive rocks floating about in zero-G, yet people walking about on them? Dual-roter helis with inverted roters?

Grace has just not been resuscitated into her body atm.
F1 nominated for Oscar - best picture
Really!!!
We watched it on Friday - after having 4DX cinema tickets last July that we didn’t use….partly because the reviews on here were shite …..

And both really enjoyed it!

(I realise now that the negative comments I’d relayed were from people pointing out the obvious Hollywood touches)
