The Sound of Fury (1950)
Frank Lovejoy is an out of work family man. There’s a baby on the way and he’s getting desperate. Reluctantly, he agrees to be the driver for Lloyd Bridges, a good time Charlie nutcase. At first they rob small stores, but Bridges graduates to kidnapping. The reaction of the town, stirred up by the provocative articles of a local journalist, is one of fury.
Directed by Cy Endfield, you can see why films like this got him blacklisted. It’s very critical of the supposed American dream. It’s a film of two halves. The first is a more conventional tale of a desperate Everyman doing something he hates to support his family. The second half is a complete handbrake turn and concentrates on the power of opinion-makers. I settled down to enjoy a standard noir crime film and got something that left an unpleasant taste.
As it’s 1950, it’s all very basically handled, but the message is still pertinent today. It was based on a true story from the 30s. Lovejoy does a great job of showing that his character is a moral person wrestling with his bad choices. The final scenes are very bleak and quite powerful.
