The Wreck of the Mary Deare (1959) 6/10
Originally intended for Alfred Hitchcock, but he didn't think he'd be able to get enough tension out of the second half courtroom scenes, so went off to make North by Northwest instead. Gary Cooper in one of his last roles, Richard Harris in one of his first.

See How They Run (2022) 3/10
Sub-Wes Anderson whimsy. An Agatha Christie-esque mystery set around performances of The Mousetrap. As with all current period pieces, diversity casting rewrites history. Saoirse Ronan as an Irish police officer at Scotland Yard. More controversially, Agatha Christie's real-life archaeologist husband, Max Mallowan, is cast as black. Sam Rockwell as the lead detective delivers a decent cockney-ish accent that occasionally falters. (Sample 'humour'. Rockwell: 'I got shot in the Italian Alps.' Ronan: 'Sounds painful.') All in all, a dud.

Gladiator II
7/10

I was a bit baffled with the link to Maximus from first film cannot remember it even being mentioned, and… well… sharks?!?

Blue Velvet. 1986. Watched it for the first time last night on BBC4. 9/10.
Blue Velvet
Watched this again the other night for the first time in years. I'd either forgotten how good it was or simply not appreciated it enough when I first watched it.
Dennis Hopper is terrifying as Frank, incredible performance.
9/10

Also watched
The Elephant Man
straight after. Another brilliant film from Lynch, probably the first film of his I ever saw when my folks rented it from Redifusion in Durham back in the early 80's!
Great performances and very moving.
9/10

i can't say it would be a film i would probably want to watch, but a number of people have said this so much that's it peaked my interest. some saying its on a par with rocketman?
Couldn’t bring myself to spend a second listening to Williams. Atrocious turn.
Go and see A Complete Unknown instead - brilliant fun and miles better music!

I’m currently sitting through Dogman the movie. *sigh*

However the trailer for the movie “Flow” looks utterly brilliant.

Watched a few seconds of the trailer .
Don't take this the wrong way , I just don't get adults watching this sort of disney style stuff. Called it cartoons in the old days. I'd be downloading this maybe for my 4yr old grandson . Must be me , Am the same with any marvel stuff , star wars , batman etc.
School kids viewing.

97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Just starting assault on precinct 13, been ages since I have watched it.

Full movie is free on YouTube if you have no other means to watch it.

Was going to watch death of Stalin but went for the lower brow option.

Surprisingly for a remake, it has been getting decent reviews. Looks that that at least made an effort to do it justice.
The ice cream van bit man, sure that would be banned now 🤣

Miracle Mile (1988) - Really interesting premise that a man randomly picks up a phone to hear a message (for someone else) that nuclear war has begun. Really good idea, spoilt by bang average acting, poor effects and somehow it's a bit boring. 6/10

There’s no higher brow option to Assault On Precinct 13.

They added the Manchester incident to the Newport scene in the film as a bit of dramatic licence. Pretend all the big moments happened in one place to streamline the story kind of thing
Thought this would really bother me but it didn’t.
Pretty sure he just went in to see Woody Guthrie on his tod too not with Seeger. And also he just went the once iirc.
But the film was so good I’ll forgive em.
Actually I don’t even know if it was a good film or not but I really enjoyed it.

The Gardener (2025)

French made film starring the outstanding acting powerhouse that is Jean Claude Van Dame. An inept French Minister is targeted for assassination by French Prime Minister but is saved by his gardener, who just happens to be an ex-special forces operative. Now I didn't expect much with Van Dame but even he couldn't save this dire film. All the voices (including Van Dame's) were dubbed. Because my wife is hard of hearing we watched this with the sub titles on and I wasn't sure if it was intentional but most of the time the subtitles didn't match what was being "said - For example there was a scene where one of the evil henchmen is shot in the foot and he screams "Motherfucker! You shot me in the foot" but what the subtitles said was "Shit! That hurt!"

Definite contender for worst movie of the year.

0.5/10

Elevation

Anthony Mackie & Morena Baccarin. Beasties rise up from the below the surface and slaughter 85% of the world's population. Only way people can survive if they stay over 8000 feet. Very similar to A Quiet Place, so had the feel of been done before. However, still a decent watch to pass the time. Although when it is revealed what the beasties actually are it immediately reminded me of Horizon Zero Dawn.

6.5/10
