His next feature, The Phoenician Scheme he’s working with a different cinematography (Bruno Delbonnel)… so perhaps he’s taken that review onboard and is going in a new direction.
 
Timestalker [2024] 5/10
A karmic journey that sees the hapless heroine Agnes reincarnated every time she makes the same mistake: falling in love with the wrong man.

Disappointing. High on concept, low on execution. I love Alice Lowe but this was barely funny save for a dildo joke at the beginning.

Robert Eggers version of the 1920’s original vampire film. A command of tone that is typical of an Eggers film (flashes of The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman) that builds the suspense brilliantly for the first hour. A gothic nightmare unfolding with enormous dread. Lily-Rose Depp delivering an excellent performance. Aaron Taylor Johnson, Emma Corrin and a very good Nicholas Hoult performance are backed up by a typically committed performance by Willem Dafoe.

I found the first half more engrossing than the second but any slight problems I had with the second half can be forgiven when the direction, cinematography and score are taken into account. The Count’s castle in particular is chilling.

Just been to see this at Dalton Park and you’ve pretty much summed up my take on it. Very dark and atmospheric as you’d expect it to be.
 
A Real Pain [2024] 6/10
Mismatched cousins David and Benji reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the pair’s old tensions resurface.

I thought I would have liked this more but I found it just okay. Kieran Culkin is excellent, though.

My expectations have been slightly lowered though since 2 friends whose opinions I trust went yesterday and both were hugely disappointed by it, calling out the acting, the script and most worryingly for me, they said it was boring and "felt like it was about 5 hours long".

Daughter and her husband went to see it on NYD. They both thought it was excellent, and they often have different tastes in films.
One comment she made to me was that anyone who is expecting a horror film will be disappointed.
 
Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
Curse Of The Were-Rabbit is a 10/10 stone cold classic in my opinion, so naturally it's impossible to not compare the two films.
This isn't as good as Were-Rabbit, but is still a very entertaining W&G adventure. The human characters aren't as funny as they could be (Peter Kay's copper is given more screen time but not one line to match his "this is arson...." quip in COTWR), and the film is at its best when the Gnomes and an old foe take centre stage.

The Return (2024) 7/10
Odysseus returns to Ithaca. He's mistaken for a vagrant, and is ridiculed by the men vying to marry the wife he left behind. Great performance by Ralph Fiennes, but some odd casting in the name of diversity, including an ancient Greek with an MLE accent.

Killing Them Softly (2012) 8/10
Adaptation of a book by George V Higgins. Tries to elevate a Boston gangland movie into arthouse, particularly through bold sound design. Not sure it works, but it's different.

All Night Long (1962) 8/10
Othello transposed to the 1960s London jazz scene. The story adaptation is a bit clunky, but great soundtrack from the likes of Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus, who make cameos.
