Nosferatu (2024)
Robert Eggers version of the 1920’s original vampire film. A command of tone that is typical of an Eggers film (flashes of The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman) that builds the suspense brilliantly for the first hour. A gothic nightmare unfolding with enormous dread. Lily-Rose Depp delivering an excellent performance. Aaron Taylor Johnson, Emma Corrin and a very good Nicholas Hoult performance are backed up by a typically committed performance by Willem Dafoe.
I found the first half more engrossing than the second but any slight problems I had with the second half can be forgiven when the direction, cinematography and score are taken into account. The Count’s castle in particular is chilling.

Spotlight (2015) 7/10
All the President's Men-type account of the Boston Globe's investigation team uncovering widespread child mollestation in the Catholic Church. Good ensemble acting, but ended too soon - should have given more time to the consequences of the scandal.
The League of Gentleman (1960) 6/10
Run-of-the-mill heist film. Doesn't live up to the potential of the opening. Nigel Patrick and Bryan Forbes resemble two ages of Brian Clough.
Miami Blues (1990) 7/10
Adaptation of a brilliant novel by Charles Willeford. The main set pieces are undercooked.

Me: started the year with 52 Pick-Up. Odd little film, with a terrific source novel by Elmore Leonard, good cast and directed by John Frankenheimer who had some decent work on his belt. But produced by Cannon who dealt mostly in trashy exploitation and had already adapted the book 2 years before.
It's not actually all that bad, and @riffraff was overly critical of it IMHO, but could have been a lot better

Werner Herzog also did a brilliant remake in 1979, with Klaus Kinski in the lead role - nobody better suited to it. (I much rewatch it. The HD trailer is a revelation after the crappy DVD version I've got in my Herzog box set.)

Tonight I am going to watch Since Yesterday. A documentary about Scottish girl bands. It's streaming on BBC if anyone fancies. I saw the Twinsets, many many years ago in Edinburgh when I was younger and more hip and less hurty hip.

do fancy seeing that, the 16yo teen wants to see it too but the imdb parent guide has put me off wanting to take her to the pictures this weekend...
not seen the lighthouse and was thinking of watching it instead of nosferatu (for the above reasons)

The Lighthouse has Robert Pattinson wanking over a mermaid at one point. I'm sure that won't be awkward watching with your teen, though.

I'm really looking forward to Nosferatu but probably won't get chance to see it until next week.
My expectations have been slightly lowered though since 2 friends whose opinions I trust went yesterday and both were hugely disappointed by it, calling out the acting, the script and most worryingly for me, they said it was boring and "felt like it was about 5 hours long".
