Watched low budget thriller ''What you wish for' & thought it was a cracker. Man visits his Chef mate whos on a good screw in South America, he's getting paid huge sums to cook for rich powerful people and seems to have the perfect life.
Some great plot twists as the movie evolves, best to go into it blind as the trailer probably gives too much away.
Good recommendation as I would have skipped this. Very solid thriller.

Very good film,I really enjoyed that.

Watched this on the recommendation of this thread and enjoyed it and a 6.8 out of 10 and possibly a sequel in the future?

Does anyone think this is a possibility?

That the original Jack was going to kill Ryan and Alice for the two 'produce' but just couldn't do it and only killed himself as there was no other way of getting away from it all?

Also added this into my watchlist from the same writer/director

Under Paris 4/10

I'm sure it was advertised as the best shark film ever on Facebook. Spent a few minutes dicking about with the sound as it was out of sync, then realised it was actually french with English dubbing. Film was garbage

Certainly seemed to suggest there could be further stories. I'm gonna check out the movie you posted too. Interesting director.

23 Paces to Baker Street [1956] 8/10
A blind man overhears a conversation in a pub, that leads him to believe a child's life is in danger. With no help from the police, he attempts to track down the crooks with help from his friends.

Enjoyed this a lot. A little bit Hitchcock, a little bit Wait Until Dark. Available on Youtube.

Cash On Demand [1961] 7/10

A charming but ruthless criminal holds the family of a bank manager hostage as part of a plan to rob his bank.

Peter Cushing is the bank manager in a Hammer film that isn't a horror. Nice chamber-piece, crime thriller.

Three films by Bertrand Tavernier (1941-2021).

Quai d'Orsay (The French Minister) (2014) 4/10
Tavernier's last feature film, and his first comedy. A satire about a young speech writer working for the French foreign minister, loosely based on Dominique de Villepin. Mildly amusing in places, but there's not much of a plot, and I don't know what point it was trying to make.

Coup de Torchon (Clean Slate) (1981) 9/10
Based on the novel Pop.1280 by Jim Thompson, Bruce Springsteen's favourite novelist, but relocated from the American Deep South to French West Africa. Philippe Noiret is a put-upon policeman in a small Senegalese town. Fed up of everyone taking advantage of him, he takes revenge by going on a murder spree. A brilliant portrait of French colonial Africa.

My Journey Through French Cinema (2016) 9/10
Documentary about the history of French cinema. Basically a love letter to the great directors and their movies, with personal anecdotes along the way.

Interesting theory but can't really see a sequel, it came across as an idea from a short story. I'll look out for the Director as well

Twisted Nerve [1968] 7.5/10
A young man with an infantilizing mother, resentful stepfather and handicapped brother retreats into an alternate child personality he calls Georgie.
He befriends a sympathetic young woman but his friendship soon turns into obsession.

Absolutely f***ing mental film only the 70s could have produced. Hywel Bennett and Hayley Mills are excellent as the leads. Billie Whitelaw plays a convincing sexually-repressed mother.
You'll recognise Bernard Herrmann's whistling theme tune as Tarantino stole it for Kill Bill. The writer Leo Marks also wrote Peeping Tom, another freaky one.

I watched that a few months ago. Quite unsettling it was too.

Rewatched Furiosa and it was still an 8 for me, excellent movie. A Quiet Place Day One at the cinema today, enjoyed it and it maintained the tension very well. 7/10
I watched it last night I'd have gone 6.5 decent , great ending but a bit samey. Also didnt help I had a twerp eating popcorn next to me non-stop and half of the film is pretty much silence

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Entertaining sequel with Eddie Murphy back in full foul mouthed 80's style action mode.
It's never going to bother the original, but I'm a sucker for a bit of nostalgia and this left me smiling.
7/10

Just watched Midsomer. Out a few years ago and supposed to herald the revival of the folk horror genre.

Quite good but a much overdone premise. If I came from the far north, Scotland, Scandinavia, Finland, Iceland and was a bit religious I would be suing. There's not a normal, non human sacrificing religious cult up there according to film and TV makers.

The scene on the cliff

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F [2024] 4/10
Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills when his daughter's life is threatened in a case involving Billy Rosewood.

I knew this would be sh**e. It was sh**e. Not as sh**e as BH3. But still nostalgia box-ticking, by-the-numbers sh**e.

You can turn on the subtitles instead (should be the default, not sure why they made the default dubbed I couldn't watch a dubbed film).

The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil (2019) 7/10
A Korean serial killer unwittingly picks a gangland boss for his latest victim. The gangster survives, and he and his gang team up with the police to catch the killer (a la Fritz Lang's M). Slickly made, some moments of genuine suspense, but ultimately fell short for me.

In Which We Serve (1942) 9/10
Propaganda film jointly directed by Noel Coward and David Lean. The story of a WWII destroyer, from its construction (great opening montage) to its sinking. Some of the middle class reserve on show hasn't stood the test of time: eg Celia Johnson's reaction to news of her husband.

Io Capitano (2023) 9/10
From the director of Gomorrah, the story of two Senegalese cousins attempting to get to Europe, overland and across the Med. Harrowing scenes of suffering are relieved by some moments of incredible beauty. Certainly succeeds in giving a human face to the migrants. I'd like to see a sequel: for those who survive the incredibly tough journey, is Europe worth it?
