Since we started making big money signings

Not really big signings though. No one has heard of them and none of them have proved a thing in the league we playing in next season. Hardly making other teams shit themselves
 

We've signed 2 players and by PL standards they aren't massive fees. We've been away for so long a lot of people don't realise £30m is standard, if not below average.

PL proven is £50-60m really.

It's still excellent to see us have a go like.
 
Jesus, don't be playing billy big balls - we're a newly promoted team who's still odds-on to go back down.
They've had years of oil/blood money to build a champions league team.
 
Ipswich and saints both spent more than 100million.

We've spent 70 and recouped 30 as we've sold our best player (imo).

It's not going to get anyone shitting themselves

Thing is, they’ve always believed they deserve to be dining at the top table and are one of the elite.

The Saudi money and sports washing project has intensified that belief. The reality is though they’ve one trophy (the league cup) in what 70 years? And finished 2nd in the top flight is it once in the PL era??

The likes of Arsenal, Man Utd (although a basket case at present) Liverpool, Chelsea etc just laugh at them.

Outside of the NE and their own minds they are still pretty much insignificant in football terms.

They do have European / Champions League football (but so do lots of clubs) it’ll be absolutely killing them deep down we are back in the PL.

If we spend more and somehow manage to beat them and stay up, with them having and below par season the knives (or swords) will be out for their Saudi owners.

I think you are clutching at straws massively here. They finished 5th and won a trophy. Lucky or not they are in the champions league. Hopefully we can build and get closer but as it stands they are miles ahead.

You think Jobe was our best player yet he didn't exactly set the Championship alight. He was steady away but didn't look any better than Neil who tailed off a bit like the rest of the team leading up to the play offs. Roberts, Ballard and Le Fee were better.

Last summer there were only 4 players signed for more than £50M in the whole league according to Transfermarkt - Onana, Neto, Yoro and Solanke

Debatable given the structure of deals for the likes of Gibbs-white but regardless, OP is suggesting the signings we’re making would worry Newcastle. The mags pay more than that for a squad full back. £30m isn’t a big fee for established premier league sides.

No straw clutching here, they got lucky that some of the usually better teams were relatively poor last season, like Man U, Spurs and Villa

Can't see any top clubs coming in to bid for Neil mind. Prem clubs just won't be interested in him.
Quite a few prem clubs were interested in Jobe and obviously top clubs abroad.
And I judge their scouting analysis more than mine.

I think Jobe was way overpriced for what he offers. Neil may surprise me and become a top player he has very good passing ability but I think our recruitment team have already given notice that they think there's better value in the European market, we'll find out soon if they're right. I think they are doing the right thing and it looks like we could have a very competitive team by the time West Ham comes to visit.

Whilst I do agree with this I don't think it was a level playing field when Mike Ashley was running them into the ground and we had Short. We still laud the six in a row over them as if we were on equal footing though when in fact Mike Ashley was happy to just finish 17th every season.
 
It’s a gamble irrespective but there is better value to be had abroad than do what Ipswich did and do the same in the Championship.
Even the most mediocre English player will be at a premium.

They are a very good team , they have spent money but they can never pay wages or spend what the big six can. Eddie Howe can't keep performing miracles every season and getting them to compete with the top 6 when they have far less resources than the elite clubs .
