Shildon in bother!

It wasn't up to Brandon to call it off. That's the umpires job. If lads want to do stuff on a weekend then they can, however they know what they're getting into when they agree to be on a cricket team.

Have to say Brandon should have done the sensible thing and called the game off as play was never going to be complete with the weather we had yesterday.

You can say they should have turned up but its lads weekends and most people want to enjoy them instead of travelling around and waiting for the inevitable postponment of the match.

If lads are not prepared to turn up and wait about they shouldn't be playing cricket it's part of the game. Every effort should be made to play, ok we are top and desperate to get on, but we always made every effort when we were bottom you can ask anybody. It was the umpires call and they said it was fit to start Shildon didn't want to play so hadn't bothered to turn up. How can that be allowed to happen ? If there are no consequences what's the point of having a rule book.

I know what you're saying mate, rules are rules at the end of the day but even if you had started, you wouldn't have been on the pitch long enough to get grass stains on your whites. Saturday afternoon was terrible here and it was well known down here as early as 9am when I went down to have a look at the wicket that it wasn't going to happen. Fair enough, the lads, technically, should have turned up but they would have been wasting their time as you lot did.

so in your league the only person who can call a game off is the umpires?

After reading this lot I'm sorry to disagree. You should in my opinion forfeit the game if the opposition and umpires turned up and declare the field playable. To me its just not cricket if any other outcome happens.

I do however agree with the point you made its a real pisser knowing your not going to get a game but turning up anyhoo.

just my twopenneth

Aye but Andy, the umpires said it WOULD have happened mate, at 1.30pm they were convinced that if Shildon had bothered to turn up the game would have started. Now Ushaw Moor and Marsden got started , albeit not for very long but long enough for Ushaw Moor to take 2 points earning them a bonus point.... Which had Shildon v Brandon begun then either side could've earned some points too!

Anyway, I guess we'll see how the league handle it. I'm not holding my breath for owt positive like!
.

i called ours off today, because no one else would play in the rain:-(

You beat Jim to it cos there was no way in Gods earth he would ever start and stand in the rain then he would wait for 15 minutes after it stopped. Then at precisely 3.30 he'd say games off I'm going home.

Brandon has answered this

In this situation it was the umpires call and not Shildons

Yes but team can elect to travel and ask the umpire for an independent judgement providing they pay him. That's we we did and he said it was fit to play.
