Shearers predictions

If the three promoted teams go down, especially after all the money that's been spent, when does an anomaly become a real problem?

Teams last season and the season before spent fuck tonnes of money after promotion and it wasn't a problem then

Whats with all these media outlets wanting Shearer's views, christ the scruffy sod is too lazy to even shave, looks like one of the homeless on the streets of newcastle.

Well, the pundits don't always get it right. In 2015-2016 the BBC's Phil McNulty forecast Chelsea would win the league and Leiceester would finish 19th. Leicester won the league and Chelsea finished 10th.

there’s not many premier league predictions out yet, but Owen Hargreaves, Joe Cole and Gab Marcotti all have them 5th as well like.

Optas “super computer” have them 6th
Feels like there's some sentiment towards last season which puts them higher in people's minds.

Here's the moment we've all been waiting for, the saddest geordies premier league predictions, obviously his got us going well...very sad man.
Shearers an arsehole, any opportunity to have a dig and endear himself to the Mecca of the North mosque attenders, he will forever be remembered as the greatest penalty taker the Premiership has ever seen, like that other black and white nonce Barton don't give him oxygen. God made him ginger for a reason.

Most of the Guardian's pundits had Leicester to go down too.

owld sly eyes was very complimentary about RLB last week when my brickie marra was doing some graft on al's new extension there. Insisted on being called Mr shearer though iirc che
Won't be happy till he's honoured like Beckham. Sir Alan Shearer, obe, gc, bem, gm. Of Darras Hall. One decoration he wanted but could never qualify for was Order of the Bath, not given to geordies.

ive heard about the 'Mr Shearer' thing, in a similar context, previously. there are plenty of reasons to dislike Shearer, but wanting to be addressed formally by contractors who are complete strangers isnt one of them like.

The real problem is that the rest of the league don’t give a toss as they are happy to sacrifice the championship etc for the sake of a monopoly of finances and opportunity.

If the league was actually about purely sport then there would be a wage cap and restrictions on player nationalities (to safeguard the English team development). But it’s not, it’s purely about money and ego/power. So the big teams that effectively run the league won’t give a damn if the promoted/relegation loop continues at the top of the championship/bottom of the prem.

It’s a sad state of affairs, this season we just have to try to break in and that’s all we can do, but the monumental task ahead of us is clear.

Oh and shearer can fuck off

You’re right that the Premier League is driven by money and power, but I’d argue that introducing things like wage caps or nationality restrictions, while great in theory, could actually do more harm than good, especially when you look at how it played out in Welsh rugby.

Take the Welsh Rugby Union. They tried to protect their national team by introducing rules to keep top players in Wales (the 60-cap rule), limited budgets for regions, etc. But what actually happened? The best players still left. The regional game became weaker. Crowds fell off. And the national team ended up suffering anyway. It didn’t stop the talent drain; it just made staying in Wales less appealing.

Now imagine the Premier League tries to do the same and brings in a salary cap or tightens restrictions to protect English talent. What do you think happens? All the top international stars go to Spain, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, even the MLS, wherever the money still flows. And more importantly, so do the best English players. Just like Welsh rugby, if the league becomes less competitive or glamorous, it won’t hold them.

The only reason salary caps work in American sports is because there’s nowhere else to go. Nobody’s leaving the NFL to play in Germany. But football’s a global game. If the Prem weakens itself with restrictions, it loses its spot at the top of the food chain FAST. And with that, all the money, visibility, and draw that comes with it.

So yeah, the status quo isn’t perfect (and the promoted/relegated clubs will keep spinning in and out) but the alternative could actually kill what makes the Premier League so dominant. Welsh rugby tried to prioritise control and ended up collapsing the domestic game. The Prem doesn’t want to make the same mistake.

all three clubs going back down for the 3rd season straight? the phrase "once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern..." springs to mind (if it does happen, which is the most likely outcome).

i'm hopeful of 1 or 2 existing teams having a really bad start & the teams who come up take their chances (well not leeds or burnley!)

Had Totalsport on in the car yesterday and they couldn't wait to mention the super computer predictions that has us 20th and the mags 6th. Marco had a go at the mag correspondent (can't remember his name) for bringing such shite up, and suggested he looked at last year's for the championship to see if it had us promoted, to which the other fella tried to track back and then change the subject. They'll look at anything for a little leg up over us.

Tbf, to John, he agreed with Marco in that it was a waste complete of airtime. No wonder I rarely listen to that show. The meltdowns have been funny of late mind 😆
