Nonsense, all that would do is give free reign for the opposition players to run around the open spaces in the box and get a good jump to head the ball. We'd be much worse off as a result.
It's not really nonsense. There's no reason at all for Defoe to be stood inside our own box, he adds nothing to defending a set piece. If we clear the ball and have nobody up the pitch then the ball's just gonna come straight back, it might not if we actually have someone to try and win the ball or at least close down the opposition.
Haven't you seen how many times the opposition have countered on us from our set pieces this season? Djibril Cisse used to stand thirty or forty yards away from our goal when we were defending a set piece and leaving him there actually helped us get the ball up the pitch and counter from defending a set piece.
