Scott Borthwick

He was very much in the conversation to bat at 3 for England in 2016 - his last season with us - he’d started the season well and IIRC scored 3 hundreds in no time (two in one game). We had two Championship games before the next Test and the eyes of the nation were on him.

Unfortunately he suffered a few failures, two low scores against Yorkshire, one where he ran himself out and that was the end of that.
Well what we do know is that they didn't select him as a specialist bstsmen and never have. His cap was as a spinner batting in the lower middle order.
Personally would rather concentrate on developing our current two young spinning all rounders.

and we on here criticised them at the time "he's a good batsman, lay him as such" etc.

but a few seasons ago he really was in contention as a batsman, Bayliss even spoke about him. He said basically as they were considering him his form fell away and that was that.

That’s up to you, but neither have the raw talent and potential that Borthwick had at their age.

I don't doubt he was being watched he is a fine cricketer but ultimately a bit like Northeast at Kent and now Hampshire and Hildreth at Somerset a succession of selectors don't fancy him.
Unlike so many on here I had no problem with him leaving it's his career but I just think it will send out the wrong message to other players who maybe tempted to move on in the future if they know they can comeback to Durham if it doesn't work out.

Ye. I had no problem either, he has to make a living just like anyone else - but I think it could be a good fit for both him and us, so why not?

Saw his father, George, at cls cc last Saturday
His parents are absolutely lovely.
Bad for us supporters not sure it has been terrible for Borthwick. He has earned a lot more dough than he would at Durham and won another county championship.
To be fair, I get the impression that dough doesn't matter a jot to Badger - the lad just absolutey loves the game.

Fantastic, pleased for the lad

people forget how good he was at 3 for that period

Good opportunity now for him

I still think its a shame he doesn't bowl anymore, he was getting better for us

Not me marra, not trying to be a man’s head either - but I still maintain, as I did at the time that his loss was the bitterest pill to swallow.

I’d go as far actually as to say there’s never been a more difficult loss for the club, since we became First Class. Which is why I’d be so keen to get him back.

All the others who have left are irrelevant in comparison. I’d take Bunny back, just because of the circumstances around it, but the likes of Coughlin and Hart can get their arse fucked.

No chance of a return unless he wants to take a massive pay cut which I very much doubt.

Since Jennings, Stoneman and Borthwick left we have struggled massively with the bat. We need to sign a couple to play 3 and 4

Totally agree with this. We need some stability as, other than Lees and the overseas player, it feels like pulling names out of a hat.

Harte was in great form at the start of the season, presume he is injured?

Well Mary has said they are actively looking to strengthen their batting resources this winter.
I would suggest if they sign Angus Robson them they don't have much of a budget. He is no better than what they have got and will probably end up playing as much cricket for the 2nds Ashe he does for the ,1st.

I don’t get people saying he’d have to take a massive pay cut.

Unless you know what he’s on now in comparison to what we’d offer him?

I imagine the club would make him one of the highest earners at the club should he return and there’s the huge factor of not having to live in London with those sort of house prices and other associated costs.

Let’s face it though, if Surrey don’t want him, we’d be the ideal destination and we could have those sort of debates then. If they do want him, we aren’t getting him back. Simple as that. That was kind of the point of the discussion all along.

Us being able to compete with Surrey financially is rather a moot point.

Who’s Mary?

If Borthwick is available, I’d offer him (pretty much) what he wants to return. Robson I could take or leave in truth.
