I was a big Jim Holton fan, but he was soon moved on.

Best reception I have ever heard for a Sunderland player. Billy Hughes was back as sub after a long term injury. In the pre- match warm up which started 10 mins before kick off in those days, the Fulwell started singing Billy’s song:

Oh Billy, Billy,
Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy Hughes

Hughes acknowledged the Fulwell with a wave as usual but the song just didn’t stop. It went on and on until Hughes just dropped to his knees looking towards the Fulwell. A special moment I remember 50 years on.
