Cambridge away 1992. Just got beat 3 nowt, didn't get out of our own half for 90 minutes. Half and half those who wanted Denis Smith out and those who wanted him in. Blows traded near the coaches.
We were totaly unprepared for the onslaught that day.
our first brush with Dion Dublin, I don't think he finished on the losing side against us.

None of this is true....I've just read the thread about the scummy Pompey fans and the general consensus is that we're all well behaved friendly angels....I shudder to think if this board had been around late 70s to late 80 s

We've taken huge numbers away and the Sunderland supporters have been highly praised.

Comments from wankers like you are irrelevant tbh.

Another vote for that Notts Co game.
Never seen anything like it and I don't think Nottingham police had either.
There was fights all over that big end we were in, especially 2nd half.
It was like one of those Australian bush fires, as soon as one was extinguished, it would immediately break out somewhere else.

The Notts Co 3-1 defeat on the last day was the worst I've seen. 3-0 down at half time and basically saved by Bristol City and Cambridge failing to win if I remember right? It was an absolutely pathetic display in the first half and was too much to take for some. We had about 7k there , which was probably half the ground I think. Massive pitch invasion at the end, but not really one of celebration. It was a very strange feeling to stay up when we were so poor.

There was an away game against Plymouth (can't remember the year) and SAFC had organised a charter flight for tbe team and supporters to fly from Ponteland to Exeter, then get on a bus to Plymouth.
The team had a shocker and lost 1-0 to a Bracewell own goal from a back pass (I think)
Some fans were very pissed off and we were kept waiting for ages at the airport for the players to arrive and board the plane.
The players were booed by some fans as they made their way to their seats, and a fan who vocally defended the tèams performance, was punched by another irate fan.
The atmosphere among the fans on the flight back to Ponteland was very strained to say the least.
*edit*
I think Bracewell underhit an attempted backpass from around 35 yards out, whoch a Plymouth player intercepted and scored the only goal of the game.

The worst single incident I've seen was in a social club in Preston in the late '70s.

Two Sunderland supporters were playing snooker against one another, when suddenly one of them smashed a pint glass on the frame of the table, then shoved it in the face of the other lad.

Needless to say, it was an horrendous thing to witness - blood and guts arl ower.

Exactly as I remember it.
Fights galore in the away end behind the goal.
It's never good seeing Sunderland fans fighting each other, and the atmosphere among our fans was incredibly hostile towards the players, and became worse as the game went on, as it was looking ever more likely that we'd be relegated at the end of the game.
Luckily results from elsewhere saved the day.

That was a crazy day for sure.
Sunderland fans arguing and fighting each other in the seats behind the goal, and the team getting beat and looking like we'd be relegated, then ultimately saved from the drop, courtesy of results elsewhere.
Cue fans invading the pitch at the end of the game in celebration of our great escape. :D
If I remember rightly, Terry Butcher got a terrible reaction from some angry fans and had to get away back to the dressing room for his own safety.
I remember a Mr Blobby braying fuck out of someone on the stairs that day!

It was a bit hostile on that pre-season tour in Belgium towards the end of Reidy's reign, someone hoyed a pint in his face at half time at Antwerp I think then the next game in Ghent the atmosphere was a bit poisonous towards Kilbane when he flicked the V's at us, as well as Reidy. Then there was a nutter from Hebburn managed to climb the razor spike fence at the front and ran across the pitch to the dugouts to hurl abuse at Reid. Back in the away stand there was definite rumblings of Reid in and Reid out with supporters arguing like fuck with each other the rest of the match and then carried on arguing in the bars afterwards.

I've not seen much myself. Just a few raised voices but never violence.

Nothing like this!

Aye I was on that flight. I remember a stunning French stewardess on the flight down. Didnt see her on return flight like. Monarch Airlines I think. It also nearly kicked off in the 'restaurant' booked for our meal between Exeter airport and Plymouth. Hardly any drink at the bar and nee one had a key to cellar!!
