Ryan."Cambo" Campbell

I think this fella deserves his own thread on the day Durham won the league in style.
Turned up as an unknown some cynics even believing he was just one of Norths mates from back in Perth.
He has been incredibly positive from the start in mid winter training. First of all calling out Clark and backing it up by playing him from day one. He said he hated draws and that Durham would be positive and play on the front foot which they have done.
He appears to attend quite a bit of 2nd Xl cricket which is good to see. And not always the case.
Now that he has had a season of this "county cricket caper" under his belt it will be interesting to see how we go next season. No doubt our championship cricket will be played in the same style but will be intersting to see what impact he can have on our t20 Performances now that he has seen for himself how ordinary we are at this form if the game.
Well done Cambo and the quiet man "Jimmy"

Hands up I was a cynic but credit where it's due it has been a superb season and he's transformed the team massively but one thing I will give him huge credit for is his man management of some players. Graham Clark is a good lad he loves Durham and speaking to him in recent times he has been down, low morale etc just wasn't given a chance to prove himself and this year Campbell has just given him so much freedom, we all know how that has worked out this year. I think Clark is the big success story this year and Campbell deserves a lot of credit for that.

Obviously we've won the league which is a massive improvement on the previous coach. The dressing room is one happy camp, the members are interacting well with everyone and Campbell himself is incredibly approachable, again a big difference to previous years. Another big difference is the captain has been allowed to captain which to his credit he has done incredibly well and you can see the difference with obviously results but also pitch body language, the team have been buzzing all season.

Huge success, massive changes and an all round happy camp.

Well done

Yea. He's has been great. If fact the three North, Campbell and Borthwick have all been great in their own respective areas - and I give Campbell some credit for Borthwick's improved captaincy.

Durham have won Division Two of the County Championship, a week after their promotion back to the top flight was secured without them even having to take the field.

Promotion had been clinched when Leicestershire failed to secure a batting point against Sussex at Hove, so Ryan Campbell's charges required a maximum of five points heading into this game to confirm top spot.

The three bowling points they obtained for dismissing Worcestershire for 313, plus the batting points left untaken by the home side – Durham's nearest challengers – were enough to put the finishing touches to a memorable campaign.

Durham will be back in Division One for the first time since 2016 when they were relegated over financial issues. Scott Borthwick was a member of that Durham side and is now the captain on their return to the top tier.

They were by a distance the best team in the division, with Ben Stokes' county embracing the aggressive approach taken by England's Test team. One of the first things that Campbell said on his arrival was that he had little time for draws, and it is no coincidence that no team in the division has won as many games.

They picked up 46 batting points – 16 more than anyone else – and lost just once, in a tight finish at Hove against Sussex. They have passed the 200-point mark in the process.

"People can be themselves and people are being backed," wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson told The Cricketer earlier this summer.

"There is no real pressure to do anything, but a lot of the boys have played together for years, which helps, and then the people who have just come in have been able to fit in seamlessly just from being nice people really.

"Good people with a good team ethos: there are no real big characters who upset anything. So, it's a combination of a few things, and it seems to be working."

Yep i was a bit cynical too when he was appointed, thought it could have been too big a step up for him, glad i was proven so wrong, roll on 2024, might buy a few extra holidays at work next season and get my membership back

He was quite highly thought after in the Associate Cricket world. His illness obviously stopped him in his tracks. I think it may well have been that his health led him to decide a county job where he could just settle in an area would be better for him than travelling the world as an international boss. We were the extremely lucky side to get him.

Borthwick has been helped this year by having good batting totals to work with in the field. Fair play to him, he's done it well.... surprised me a bit

Totally agree,it's obviously easier to captain when the opposition is under scoreboard pressure but you can't help but wonder how much interference regarding tactics came from the coach last season.
Delighted for Badger who is a top guy. The only reason for signing Ackerman I can see was for him to replace Badger both as batsman and captain.
That can go on the backburner now.
Despite our strength in batting Badger is the only one who is a natural No3

Replacing trevaskis imo.

Think he'll bat 7 and provide a spin option.

I didn't actually realise he played for Holland

Parkinson is the spin option. Trevaskis  was the spin option but wasn't a regular pick. DeLeede is and will be No 7. Can't see the logic of signing Ackerman unless it's to replace one of the regular batters.

I forgot we're signing parkinson 😅

Le leede could bat 8 if our spinner is at 7 instead of 11 and we'd have an incredibly deep batting line up

We'll see, but aye hard to call
We're actually going to have a very deep squad if everyone stays fit. We might see some whiteball specialists

"Before last season, captain Scott Borthwick had a chat with James Franklin, Durham’s former coach. Franklin told him that the average team needs 13 points a game to get promoted. “It was a mindset of ‘if we draw every game, we probably go up’,” Borthwick recalls. “Fast forward 12 months, it’s how can we try and win?” - that sums Franklin up and backs up everything I've said. that was his boring dull mindset and it numbed everyone & prevented the captain from captaining especially with the declarations and it pissed the players off massively as they were very much held back.

That absolutely underlines everything I have heard previously from “informed sources” about the Franklin regime. He held players back rather than encouraging them. What the team achieved last year was in spite of the coach and not because of him. The atmosphere in the dressing room is unrecognisable from that of a year ago. Astonishing contrast.

Me and @The Red Telephone were saying it most of last season and even before that, he was an absolute drain on everyone/everything. Nobody liked him, he held players back, he was very negative with his approach to games, he prevented the captain from captaining and he generally just pissed a lot of people off to the point where it was hard to "get up for games". "destructive criticism instead of constructive criticism" was the most stand out feedback I was told from inside the dressing room along with many examples of how Campbell now allows the players to express themselves and not to be scared of making mistakes. Franklin was part of the coaching team at the West Indies who failed to qualify for the WC also. The day he left the club, the "likes" on social media were telling from certain people who are very close to the dressing room. Campbell has done very well to refresh things so quickly.

His crowning glory for me was when he returned from the Hundred and arrived at Trent Bridge for the One Day Cup Final in 2021. He quickly managed to p*** off everyone in the dressing room by overturning Alan Walkers team selection. Man management at its worst.
