Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES)

Curious why macron seems to have a call with Putin every few days , only western leader to do so I think.
I'd suspect the US & EU have asked Macron to keep a channel open to Putin. I'm guessing of all the Western leaders he's the best placed
Clearly Johnson is a buffoon & compromised
Biden said he wouldn't meet with Putin if an invasion started
The German guy is a rookie
Macron certainly has some history with Putin. Sensible choice if that's the case

Alternatively Macron is still pissed of with the US/UK over the submarine shenanigans and he's going to switch sides

1. The Russians all turn around, go home, and Putin accepts Ukraine is a democratic sovereign nation.

2. The Russian army is defeated, whixh ultimately means every Russian soldier which enters Ukraine is killed.
I would say that is the two extreme positions. The reality will probably be some kind of compromise position. Looks like Putin is paying a heavy price both in troops, military hardware and economic sanctions at home, but he is not the kind of guy that will admit to having made a balls up. I would reckon that the west is counting on some kind of regime change, which is easier said than done when you have an autocrat in charge. economic sanctions are not only screwing the oligarchs, the general population must be suffering financially, as the standard of living had been falling steadily before the latest and much more severe punishments kicked in.

It's an interesting read, and a good counter balance to some of the pro-Ukraine boosterism.

FDD are well know neo-con pro-conflict think tank, and I think that comes across strongly

The big problem I have with it is that he compares the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the US invasion of Iraq - the shock and awe didn't work and so a ground assault was necessary

At the risk of stating the obvious - Iraq was a bloody shambles. If the Russians are only doing as well as the Americans did i Iraq they are in big trouble

(apologies that you posted this some time ago, but I don't have time to keep up with this thread real time)

The problem with bits like it is they are very one dimensional. I doubt anyone ever queried that Russia militarily will win this conflict. At least in the short term. But there are a huge number of other factors - cultural, political, economic - that means they might not achieve their aims. And by those measures last week was terrible for them.

You have posted odd things on this thread. I have huge sympathy for the Russian soldiers who don’t want to be there. But in terms of things to feel passionate and angry about I’m far more concerned about Ukrainian children being carried out dead from burning buildings then I am about Jeremy Vine’s views on adult soldiers who voluntarily joined the Russian army.

Conscription is still in force in Russia mate.

What’s the compromise? Even if Putin is replaced the choice is either the army turn around and go home or they are killed.

I will ask you a third time then, and see if you can answer this time:

Do you want the invasion defeated and the Russian army to get out of Ukraine?

It's within all our interests for the conflict to cease.

Am I pro-Russia? No.

Does that mean I want to nonchalantly wish deaths upon tens of thousands of Russians? No you f***ing sick psycho.

They remind me of the images of Argentinian troops surrendering during the Falklands war

We are getting somewhere. So for the conflict to cease the Russian army either have to turn around and go home, or be killed.

I seriously wish it’s the former without a single additional death. But until that happens, killing the invading soldiers is the alternative.

Surely you understand that?
