Running Thread 2026

Got within about 15 seconds of my 5k PB (which is 22.28) at Herrington Park Run last week. Harder this week cos was wearing my reserve trainers and weather was atrocious.

Onto the Sunderland City 10k next week 😎
Went for mine this week after getting back into running this year Got the exact same time as my PB from dec 2023 (23.48).
Gutted!

Thinking of doing the sunderland 10k and trying for a PB there. Closing day is Wednesday I think

Cheers I did google and it brought nothing back - appreciate the help

Turns out I cant officially as you had to do it by April 1st.....I wasn't injured at that time doh! Will probably just rock up and do 10K and see what happens at finish line
Bare in mind your bib will have Half Marathon wrote on it, and timing chip linked to that distance, the bloke who calls names out at the finish line might think you're about to set a new course record for the HM
First 2 weeks back into running, inspired by my sister in law running the London marathon. Absolutely loving it but mental how unfit you lose fitness, and how quick it comes back.

Tips for improving cadence? I’m 6’7 and my runna app tells me my cadence is 137, I’ve read it should be 180? Nee idea how I’d get to that, feel like I’m taking baby steps as is
I've never gave my cadence a 2nd thought. Too busy concentrating on breathing and putting one foot Infront of the other
Shields sanddancer 10k tomorrow, considering opening a bottle of red just now 😀

Herrington is a tough PR mind! That probably equates to sub 22 on a flat track

You think mate? I’ve not done any others until Chester-le-Street the other week and it’s as flat as a witch’s tit! First time I’d done that one and it was too busy I thought, about 600 people.

Absolutely. The elevation over Herrington is significant compared to Riverside, albeit riverside is more congested. A flatter track and your time will drop

Only felt one hill at CLS, at the end of the lap. Was barely out of breath when I finished but didn’t get PB, probably cos I hadn’t done the course before.

Definitely my PB at Herrington is 25:40 and my PB at CLS is 24:15 - but Herrington is a much nicer atmosphere and run even if its a harder course

Ahhhh that could be problematic - however when they see the size and shape of me tootling arounf at 1:05 they'll know Ive either screwed the route up or entered the wrong race...

The half marathon sets off half an hour later to be fair, just pull your number off towards the end of something or pull the timing chip out 😅

If I enter the 10k run am I ok to pick my racing pack up on the Saturday or will they only be giving out the 5k ones then?
Don’t fancy the hassle on the morning of the race

Just checked the race guide, you can pick your number up on Friday 11:30-14:30 or 16:00-18:00 from City Hall SR1 3AA and on Saturday 10:30-17:00. Can also pick your number up race day from 8am at The Fire Station

Thanks, I’ll head over Saturday and pick it up.

6.5km done. 144 cadence which is an improvement on the 135 from previous efforts.
Made a conscious effort to take smaller strides, fuck knows how I get that up to 150-170. It felt like I was shuffling/baby steps

I’d like to add it was a very easy, zone 2 run. So perhaps picking the pace on future runs would increase this.

Yeah pace will increase it (usually). Well done on getting it to 144, small steps to improving the efficiency (pun intended).

As it looks like I'll have to try the Sunderlan half next week, went for a slow 15K to see how my calf gets on and it just about lasted but was getting tight so I reckon 50/50 I'll get around without it going as long as I go at a slower sensible pace - was aiming for 7 min per Km.

there’s something to be said about adrenaline in races I reckon. Any niggles are always worse in the lead up, especially if you’re in a training block.

Race day atmosphere, fueling, adrenaline and nerves will carry you through mate. Best of luck.

I’ve been out on a 14k run this evening and was thinking about this, so tried to run at 140 cadence for a few moments and genuinely couldn’t get it down to that. It felt like I was bouncing on the spot 😂 all credit to you for trying to increase it mind, you’ll get there, I’m sure.

Give this a go :

I wonder if it’s my watch not accurately tracking it then? I am 6’7 with long legs (obviously) but today I tried to run with such small steps, like crazy small.

Will give those drills a go

It could well be and as I say, I'm just a novice runner who has read a few books and articles on things as I tried to improve my form. Regardless of your height, the high 130's to low 140 range is still really low. Try counting it out, or running to a playlist/metronome set at 160bpm (would suggest higher but let's be sensible here :D ). It could well be that the watch is off, I've never used an apple watch, so no idea of their quality in terms of data for running.

It's not necessarily the small steps it's the turnover over the steps.

Have you tried getting cadence to a quicker rate by running on the spot first? Really light feet, tap tap tapping your way to see what the cadence gets to then?

I can't remember if I saw it discussed on here or on FB. But has anyone tried Decathlons own make running shoes (kiprun is one of them I think)? I'm due a new pair and have been thinking about trying some, just wondering if they're worth trying?

Never tried them myself but I'm certain the French bloke who recently beat the European 10k record wears them, seems a decent enough endorsement 😅
