It would look horrifically embarrassing for both parties and ITV too. Hence it wouldn't have gotten a bloody word in about it on Friday had it not been pretty much assured.
Added to this, if this breaks now at this stage it isn't going to reflect well on Keane from outside eyes at all.

He's probably already established a reputation for being difficult to work with - likely a key reason behind being out of a job for so long - if he gets this close then it comes out talks have broken down or he's turned us down. I don't think the phone rings again.

Then why didn’t he? What is he losing by being open and honest? If I was going to do something I would think saying it to people would make people believe me than saying no comment.
He never denied it so it's obvious he's been approached, and is maybe still in talks but nothing officially signed yet. You don't just say it on TV if you haven't signed anything

I’d rather use Ignore. Goodbye.

Aye I'll just say

'Yes Mr Pogatch, I am taking the Sunderland job I'm happy to announce live on air on ITV to millions, usurping Sunderland AFC with this announcement before they make it and before I have signed the physical contract itself, as well as breaking many other potential terms of my ITV contract'

ffs man haway. Elementary that.

So many people have buried their head in the sand for months. We've never looked like top 2 material.
.. Had thought that we looked about the third best team, while still hoping we would manage it. It's happened to other teams that way .. Now, who knows where we lie. It's anyones guess ..

If he's not officially signed any contract he or Speakman can't actually say anything about being the manager. He could have well signed it tonight. We're not going to know till we announce a manager Keane or not

No inside info whatsoever and we have gave ourselves a hard task but I reckon he will be in charge of our next game.
Some players will love him, some may be terrified
If anything, after yesterday there is less expectation so nothing to lose.
Buckle up and ride the rollercoaster.
I think he'll be manager, there's just too much stuff like Edwards reporting and what Keane said. However the club really shot themselves in the foot not getting it done for Saturday

It's probably more complicated than even we can imagine.
If anything there will be less pressure as top 2 now seems even less likely.
But......
Imagine play off final, defoe on the pitch, keane in the dugout.....
