Roy Keane

Probably Seb - not scrolling through 700 pages to check - but did like this in an article by Sunday Times writer David Walsh today, remembering a relatively recent conversation with Keane in November:

"He’s not arrogant, nor modest. He thought if he was somebody else scrutinising his CV he would wonder, “Why doesn’t that guy get another opportunity?” I wondered if there was a level of club beneath which he wouldn’t go? It didn’t work like that, he said. He was hoping to get another chance with a Premier League or a club close to the top of the Championship but then it wasn’t as cut and dried as that.

What did he mean? It would depend upon the club, he said. And then he brought up Sunderland. The point was that if by some freak of disastrous results, Sunderland lost their place in the Football League and he was asked to become their manager, he would seriously consider the offer. Even if they were non-League, Sunderland, he said, were a club with a fine history, a great stadium, a big and passionate following. What is more, during his 2½ seasons at the club Keane felt he belonged. He liked the people at the club and felt the fans were fair to him. Hardworking people, he said, who liked footballers who worked hard."

Ok a week is enough to throw away the goodwill of fans and now look over our shoulders for the play offs
Yes, ok. But I think it's more a sudden realisation that we aren't in that good a spot. It's quite telling that almost no one thinks Johnson was going to take us up. 10 days ago there wasn't really a clamour for his head, but you'd be hard pushed to find people who think he should still be manager.

So yes this week has been a long time for us.

Not been on here for 5 minutes. Have we hounded anyone else out ?
There’s a high chance we get Keane and a high chance him and Speakman get on, may even do well. What are people going to say if this happens ?
For the record I also think they should have appointed quicker. It’s a mistake I think, well intentioned I’m sure if it is the clubs doing - it sounds like they are trying to be thorough but the dropped points tell us it was probably a bad decision. That doesn’t mean Speakman is the spawn of the devil though and who knows, he could be the man trying to get Keane against the wishes of some board members. I’ll wait and see facts date I say data rather than over use my emotional brain.
Speakman is in a strange position, if we don't go up this season as looks likely. If we don't look like going up comfortably next season then he has to go. Been given more than enough resources to get the club up.

I would be absolutely staggered if it doesn't happen now based on those.

No way in hell would it even have been uttered (yet alone that reaction of his allowed to have got air time) if it was in doubt.

In my view....
Thiking about it logically...

Keane's reactions to questions both on Friday & today, added to KLD's social media activity... if it doesn't happen both sides are going to look a little silly.

So many people have buried their head in the sand for months. We've never looked like top 2 material.

Tough question for Speakman that.

Did you
A. Employ the wrong manager
B. Recruit the wrong players
C. Jump the gun in sacking the manager

Surely at least one of the most be true
Must have sacked him too early as we should have had the new bloke in for Saturday. It should have all been sorted, very unprofessional

It’s true that mind. My own personal view on Johnson was that I was unsure until the Bolton game. I thought it could go either way - amazing run followed by bad run, big win followed by big loss, top of league then down to 4th in 10 days. It was madness.

It would look horrifically embarrassing for both parties and ITV too. Hence it wouldn't have gotten a bloody word in about it on Friday had it not been pretty much assured.

Anymore if that article perhaps? The link is on a, err, forget what’s it’s called. Anyway I can’t read it without parting with some dosh
(It's called a paywall).

I pulled the bit about us, or at least the most revealing bit. The rest was merely the authors opinion that he thinks Keane is more mature now and that we should go for it. Think there is a manager in there.

Use your eyes and ears, if it wasn't happening or nowhere near done he would just come out and say it, not just say no comment .

Then why didn’t he? What is he losing by being open and honest? If I was going to do something I would think saying it to people would make people believe me than saying no comment.
