Ross Stewart

Getin big Ross, great to see him back. Grateful for him mostly playing class in every game he played for us.

Totally made the right decision to get a contract that would set him up for life, instead of a packet of wotsits and a curly curly that was in offer here. Also the team he joined are battling to get to the premier league this season, it was obvious we would be closer to relegation zone than play off zone!

There's no way on earth Southampton are going to let someone they spent £10m on and who has played about 20 minutes, leave on loan next season if they get promoted.

Even for the optics of it alone in their fans eyes, Southampton wouldn't do it.

He was brilliant for us, pity his agent held us to ransom for 12 months. Left a very bitter taste in a lot of fans mouths. He's been injured 18 month and he's 29?

anyhoo fantastic players for us, why did KS get so shit at signing players when he did so well in the 1st 12 months
Wouldn't blame the agent at all mind. Stewart will have been on buttons at Ross County. Wouldn't exactly have been creaming it in when signing for us in league one, even with a promotion rise. Both he and his agent will have known that, at his age, this was going to be his first, and probably only, big deal. By all accounts we weren't prepared to go anywhere near what he could get elsewhere.

I suppose it's understandable in a way, in that parachute (and high player sale revenue) Southampton would be able to outbid most at this level, and if we really smashed the structure for him it would get others, rightly or wrongly, wanting a rise or being pissed off. But it was known for a long time that he was going to take the chance to set himself and his family up for life, and we ended up getting a very good fee for him. Don't think any party did anything wrong tbh (at least not until we subsequently failed to replace him, never mind using the money to improve the side elsewhere)

100% this. Good deal for all involved. We simply couldn’t match what Southampton could offer (be interested to know how high we went, if indeed we even tried!).

The whole point of the ‘model’ is to move on a player or two for large profits and reinvest the money. I’ve very concerned at our ability to reinvest given the last few transfer windows though.

It seems that we are stuck in the ‘long term’ part of investing the money to develop players and their values.

We have done absolutely nothing with the squad in terms of ‘short to mid term’ planning and getting players in who can really help the team now.

Summer is upon us and it is a huge one for our future. Given our last 3 transfer windows I don’t have a great deal of faith in our ability to get players in to hit the ground running and immediately improve the squad. I hope I’m wrong.

Really? He’s been injured for pretty much 18 months. Unless he was going to be played every week he will need games to build match fitness.
Assuming they buy yet more forwards to compete in Premiership he could find himself third ot fourth choice. He will never get the chance to get to full match fitness.
A loan until Xmas with guarantees on starting would be best thing for player and club

I wonder if Southampton go up if theyd want to send RS out on loan.

Sounds daft considering the money they spunked on him but then hes hardly kicked a ball in the last 2 years, would be difficult for him to get back up to speed in the Prem.

Would be ironic if we loaned him for half a season and paid his wages!
They will definitely want him for their squad.

Let’s be honest to club were dying to sell him. As soon as there was profit to be made they were rubbing their hands injured or not. Same with clarke. If Sunderland were serious about keeping clarke, especially with the sell on clause in his contract we would set a ridiculously high asking price to try and frighten clubs off. We are almost broadcasting our asking price. Amateur by the club

It was obvious he’d make the step up after we got promoted, he’s the complete forward.

If we made a mistake, it was not offering him an extension on decent (but probably not close to what Soton were offering) money the day after Wembley. Before he’d started the next season scoring for run, he’d probably have taken it.

If he was contracted until 2027 I doubt anyone would have stumped up the fee necessary to get him out of the club. The contract winding down and his injuries meant our options were very limited.

Want to explain why we didn’t sell Clarke last summer then?

There were bids and we rejected them because they weren’t high enough.

People on here just make up stories to suit their feelings.
