Yeah, similarly the other way round.Aye the course of the present A19 was basically the Sunderland bye-pass. That's why the road makes that huge swoop around the west of the town, Before it was built we had to suffer heavy vehicles comming up from Teeside driving right up Fawcet and crosssing the Wearmouth Bridge in order to make their way to the Tyne, It wasn't built to define the limits of the City of Sunderland anymore than the North Circular Road defined what became Greater London.
A19 used to go through Billingham and over the Newport Bridge.
