Roker near Sunderland

Seen this in the press a lot, pic of Roker or Seaburn beach, described as near Sunderland. Or even no mention of Sunderland at all.

Both are very much Sunderland.

Just heard on 6 Music, Whitburn described as Tyneside.

Also quite regular when the biggest place between Edinburgh and Leeds doesnt get a mention on the weather map.

Any others?

Tbf Whitburn is part of South Tyneside

What tends to happen is when it's something positive, it'll be such & such in Washington, (either in Tyne & Wear or near Newcastle)

And when it's bad, its just such & such In sunderland (when it happened in Washington)

It's the magedia as SRB would point out

Aye I’ve heard 6 Music describe Nadine Shah as from Newcastle (she’s from Whitburn). You’d think Lauren Laverne would put them right like.

Can you post a link? I’ve never heard Roker described as “near Sunderland” I’d argue it’s the most famous suburb possibly because of the beach snd your old football ground.

Whitburn is SR6 as it's in the same post town as Sunderland as are Seaham & Murton etc, old Post Office areas from years ago, but strangely enough if you go on Google maps & click on any business etc in Whitburn the listed address will be Whitburn, Sunderland SR6, no mention of South Tyneside, the comp also uses Sunderland in their address on official correspondence.
I think it's a bit like those who still put Sunderland, Co Durham as their address. 😉

Bullshit actually as when Nissan do something good it's the Sunderland plant but if its bad it's the Washington plant 😂

Well Whitburn is technically in South Tyneside.
Roker and Seaburn are their names, so why not use them?
I think the TV weather map varies the towns and cities highlighted.
It’s no big deal.
Historically Whitburn has always been part County Durham and if you look at an early C15th map you won't see South Tyneside on it at all. If we organised a "special military operation" Sunderland could annex Whitburn within three days.
