Robin Roefs 🇳🇱 Signed!

The same people who thought he was one of the best in the Championship, which was always utter nonsense, both statistically and via the eye test.

I'd argue he should have been replaced if we had stayed in the Championship, never mind the PL!

Of course he was one of the best in the championship.

People like Cooper who people rated highly as he had a higher save percentage showed his quality in the play off final, just as Patto showed his.

Not everything can be measured with a stat - temprament and calmness and making saves in big games.
He was excellent in the playoff final, which is clouding people's opinion as it's the last game he played for us which had a massive reward so there's (understandably) a heavy amount of recent bias.

Don't take my opinion for it by the way. Go and look at his goals prevented numbers.

He was 15th for goals prevented last season of regular starting GK's, 3rd in 2023/2024 (excellent) and 16th in 2022/2023, so an average of 11th best during his 3 full Championship seasons.

That's before you talk about the other aspects such as his distribution, inability to collect a cross/high ball and being continually rooted to his line.

There's a reason GK was one of the first positions the club went all out to improve over the summer, and why this talk of him being linked with PL teams when we were in the Championship, was rubbish.

There's plenty of goalkeepers who have been deemed to have performed well in the Championship over the last few seasons who have, rightly or wrongly, ended up getting decent moves, even though they were first choice for their team at the time, e.g. off the top of my head - Hermansen, Kaminski, Muric, Trafford, Palmer. For clarity, I'm not saying I would have signed all of these before that starts, but using them as examples.

If Patterson truly was one of the best Championship goalkeepers, we'd have ended up getting offers we couldn't refuse for our second choice GK when we ended up signing Roefs with a month still to spare before the window closed.

I don't see how anyone can logically see a GK who was 15th and 16th for goals prevented in two of his three Championship seasons and equate that to being "one of the best Championship keepers". It's like trying to argue that the sky is green.

You can say that about nearly every single player who played last season though. We pretty much signed players to replace everyone.

You post every single poor stat, yet overall wasn't he about 4th in terms of clean sheets?

As if some of those keepers listed are as better like Muric 😀

Which Championship clubs btw are going to have money to 'make us an offer we cant refuse ' what absolute horseshite 😀

Is that overall goals prevented? Because you'd expect him to do worse on that in seasons we performed well and therefore conceded fewer chances.
No surprise that he was busier in 2023-24 when we struggled for the second half of the season than he was in 2022-23 and 2024-25 when we reached the play-offs.

His data is middling. This is underwhelming after some of the targets we’ve gone for. Given the expected market price of Patterson, this falls more into the competition bracket than an obvious number one imo.

I wanted the Ukranian.

Good shout.

Watching the game back and I thought his two saves from Mateta early in the first half really went under the radar.

Very, very important in the grand scheme of things.
Second one (I think anyways, just the one that wasn't from Xhaka's backpass) was flagged offside after Roefs had saved it so it won't even be accounted for in the data either.

If he had another good season next year, Courtois will be 35 ish , RM would be all over us to get RR as a replacement.
I realise 35 is not old for a keeper but that would be 9 seasons at RM for him and they love freshening things up.

Happy with my assessment having never seen him:

Yep. Fits perfectly for a side who block the middle of the pitch and are willing to accept that the consequence of that will be more crosses into the box.

Smart, logical recruitment.

Also a good example of how data can be used to flag a player that might suit a team if you know exactly what you're looking for and need, regardless of how often he has been watched.

This is only compared to fellow Eredivisie GK's (the club will have far more extensive data), but that "crosses stopped" number is something that has been prevalent in all the GK's we've been linked with this summer, as @woodlebert noted in a prior thread.

He had a +9.7 PsxG - GA = expected goals conceded – actual goals conceded figure, which was the best in the Eredivisie last season and one of the highest figures that any keeper has posted in that division in recent memory.

In English, he was essentially worth 10 goals to them over the course of last season in the league.

On the subject of pre-season stats when he was linked, his goals prevented rate was also exceptional @woodlebert.

Good shout.

The data presented was a bit middling.

But this is why I - a bloke looking at one graph - is not making decisions, compared with blokes who will have hundreds of graphs and, probably, several scouting reports.

There is also a suggestion that the graph initially shared was bollocks. Better data duly arrived.

This isn’t really the bump you think.

Easily as important as Xhaka as far as our summer signings go. Him, Sadiki, Xhaka and Mukiele in particular are just absolutely oustanding signings.
We have a list of “ outstanding signings “-and a list of players that have kicked on from the Championship and are in themselves “ outstanding “
Tremendous !

Imagine spaffing £52 million on Elanga, £65 million on the German Giraffe, £50 million on Wissa and £39 million on Ramsay. TWO HUNDRED AND SIX MILLION POUNDS!!! That's just the initial fee as well. Oh my, life is beautiful...
But PSR ?!
( they voted for financial restrictions as well prior to takeover )
