I doubt the club expected Patto to get to the level he has in reality - we were bringing in Hoffmann and sending Patto to Notts County when they had a similar level of experience and similar ages. His calmness, temprament and at times shotstopping probably got him to a level many never expected.

My only concern with Roefs is how he'll react as a young keeper after a couple of tonkings (the villa mistake didn't affect him like) and some club paying a fortune for him if he keeps this up.

I think he has that dutchness about him, mistakes and drubbings I don’t think will affect him that much. It’s part and parcel of learning as a keeper his age and he will see it as that. He’s progressed so fast this basically his second full season of men’s football in reality. I’m glad the others turned us down.

I've seen nowt of the Polish lad who got injured and the Bournemouth keeper must be decent as they're doing well, but an early goal he conceded that I saw he looked flappy as f*ck 😀

However we've arrived at Roefs I'm quite happy we did. He looks a level above - I think a dropped ball in an early game when coming for a cross and the Villa goal are the only negatives and you have to be quite critical to find those.

I think it's his calmness and decision making so far. Confidence is great but without the other two it would sharply evaporate.

What’s most impressive though is as a young lad it’s like he’s thought “meh keepers make mistakes and I’m fing class” 🤣. Confidence in a keeper is an amazing trait. I remember speaking to someone who trained Pickford who said the same that Pickford is a very good keeper like lots are but what sets him apart is he’s almost oblivious to pressure or criticism and plays the same as he would in Sunday league at the top level

But funny how fate works - would we have him had we got what was apparently our first choice from Chelsea that went to Bournemouth?

One very good save from the long range strike in which he parried well clear but towards the end of the game really showed how much he has improved us by claiming a couple of crosses and punching a corner well clear under pressure.

Basic stuff but done extremely well and very noticeable when we don't have a goalkeeper who can do it.

Thing is, you go back to Pickford since we last had a keeper like that and it was his 1st season as a 1st teamer at Sunderland.
We had quality keepers before but they all had some flaw, but the likes of Gordan and The Mig countered it by being superb in other areas like shot stopping/1 on 1's

And how many regimes in the past would have been this ruthless given Patto was MOTM in the playoff final and been solid to very good in the Championship despite a weakness on parrying and crosses.

That Bulka was our first choice prior to Petrovic and he went to Saudi and did his ACL!

One thing is for sure though, all 3 had excellent numbers in terms of crosses claimed, so that was a key focus for us, the same as Alderete on aerial duels won in the box.

We allow the opposition to have the ball out wide as opposed to centrally and with that, we allow a lot of crosses, as statistically you are far less likely to score from a cross then a central position (only 1 in every 80 odd crosses results in a goal or similar), so buying a goalkeeper who is excellent at claiming them makes a lot of sense.

Smart, logical recruitment.

There’s been some serious strategic work on how to stay up and we’ve got a manager who can play a variety of styles rather than being wed to a rigid formation/style like Big Ange for example.

His composure when dealing with crosses is what I’m impressed with the most. Just seems to catch every single one.

He’s prone to the odd error (Villa at home springs to mind), but every keeper is. For a newly promoted side, he’s been absolutely exceptional. The vast majority of signings have tbf.

It's a myth that Patterson was ever a very good Championship keeper. He was below average for goals prevented in 2 out of our 3 Championship seasons and had poor command of his box and distribution. At best he was an average Championship keeper.

It's harsh, but the club were clearly well aware he was never going to be good enough for this league and acted fast.

Having Roefs in goal is night and day, he's better than Patterson in every attribute that makes a good keeper.

Think that’s harsh tbf. Can’t think of any other clear errors apart from that? Might be wrong like.

It was poor mate. He’s went to punch it two handed instead of just tipping it round the post. It’s swerving a bit but it should be saved by a prem keeper.

As I said, prone to the odd error. One error being the odd one. 8-) :lol:
