Ripping off other tunes


So I stuck on a Nils Lofgren album, chilled out Sunday morning, and thought I'd got albums mixed up. First track side 2 is Sweet Midnight, listen to this then Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer, released the following year...

Baseline is exactly the same thing, but it's just three notes over Em; I'd say you'd find it on many songs prior to Nils' one.
 
Tom Petty was my favourite. It was brought to his attention that someone had ripped off one of his songs. He gave it a listen and drawled, 'I probably stole it from Eddie Cochrane anyways',

The label sued him because the second song he wrote sounded too much like the first song he wrote.

You didn’t rip me off on THAT song and changed the subject……….. must happen all the time.

...which bears a little similarity to a Bauhaus track from 1981 but it's kind of pushing it...
