Rehan Ahmed

Prefer him to Jacks or Livingstone. They seem confident Ali will be fine anyway so doubt he’ll play
I’d rather Jacks than Mo/Livingstone get a chance as he fits the game plan and is still young. Livingstone can be too sloppy for me.

If it were up to me, I’d just bring in Woakes and have Root as our spinner, especially for Lords.

There’s no correct answer as all options are uninspiring, but I don’t see the point in picking Mo again other than because he’s one of the lads.

I’d go for jacks to as he’s a genuine good bat with potential to be more, which fits in to their idea of getting Many runs as fast as possible

But I think it’s as simple as he turns ball same way as root, pretty sure Ali will play like from what mccullum said. I thought he actually looked decent till he got injured tbf

Smaller sample size, but Ahmed is also a good bat. He himself thinks it’s his strongest suit

A ton and 3 fifties in 10 first class matches

Yeah he is, and i think it’ll be his main strength in his career actually. Just think jacks is fairly expericence young cricketer now with some big scores in red and white ball. Ahmed is in the Squad anyway like so obviously ahead

I think jacks could be a big player though, he’s so new to bowling but we need him to keep playing for surrey to improve.

It’s a difficult one with Rehan as I’m sure England would love to have him as their number 8 and be the number one spin option, but his bowling as things stand just isn’t reliable enough.

You don’t really need a leg spinner (or two spinners if we were to consider playing Bashir as well) anywhere outside of the sub continent unless they’re world class like Warne, Mushtaq or Rashid Khan.

On the flip side I guess is he really that much of a downgrade on Bashir who also bat or field

But Moeen made a career out of being a batsman who could bowl part time off spin.

Then progressed his bowling within the role.

Rehan is 20 with a test fifer already to his name. Moeen turned 27 just after his debut.
Of Rehan doesn't get many wickets he won't get in the team

He's got a better record than Bashir in CC.

I'm not suggesting or expecting they will pick Rehan mind. Just saying being a batsman who can bowl spin did Moeen no harm.

But then Rehan is a leggy and unlikely to get picked for that reason. He's definitely more suited to white ball from a bowling perspective.

It's Bashirs place he'd take though you don't take any of our batters out to put him in

Agree but generally the spinner has a minor bowling role nowadays apart from on the subcontinent. Pretty essentially therefore that he can bat.Given two similar young spinners as Bashir and Rehan, then clearly Rehan should get preference. Certainly think Rehan should be given an opportunity this series.

Wouldn't say minor Bashir has bowled more than anyone this game for us

Looked okay 1st innings but the Indians milked him and got after him 2nd. Not sure he's out long term answer myself. Especially as he can't hold a bat.

I wouldn't be adverse to having Rehan in the side. Him and Root can fill the spinners role. Shores up the batting line up.
I can appreciate what they see as potential in Bashir. His height should enable him to get bounce on harder Aussie wickets.

Bashir going at 4.5 an over, taking not many wicket, bowling few maidens, offering nothing in the field or with the bat.
Vs
Ahmed going at 4-6 an over, being an option for the tail, bowling few maidens, offering the capability to bat 7 in the test team and not worse than Bashir in the field.
Chuck in being captained by Stokes

Yeah I do too but there comes a point where you have to play your best players right now rather than the players you want them to be.

I know Indians play spin better than most but he didn't look threatening at all today other than a couple balls here or there. In conditions which kinda suited him. Offered some bounce and a little turn here or there but other than holding up an end while Stokes rotated the seamers at the Kirkstall lane end he didn't look very threatening.

I'm still trying to work out his identity as a bowler but I can't. Doesn't land it on the spot every ball, tweaks it now and again, beats the bat now again. I'm probably being harsh like.

If we're going to pick average spinners, at least pick an average spinner who can bat.
